In negotiation with teak, kadamb, and neem,
and the shifting thresholds of privacy and openness,
on the red soil of Tamil Nadu,
the house takes shape around what already stands.

Spaces open on all sides,
held between trees, light, and sky,
and drawn by the pull of a catenary.

Terrace Theatre | An Extension Above the Everyday⁣

A space for Atman Theatre School, led by theatre practitioner Sritej Bhatt. Set within a quiet residential neighbourhood, the project transforms the rooftop of an existing home into a place for rehearsal, movement, and performance.⁣

For years, classes and workshops unfolded in the open areas around the residence, shaped by shifting weather and improvised arrangements. The new studio creates a defined setting for this ongoing practice while remaining closely connected to the rhythms of the house below.⁣
Organised as a single adaptable volume, the interior remains largely unobstructed, allowing bodies to move freely and collective energy to gather.⁣

The studio sits on the terrace as a lightweight steel structure, allowing the new volume to rest above the existing house while leaving the domestic environment below undisturbed. Sectionally, the space is shaped by a pitched roof that introduces height and direction. A continuous clerestory along the eastern edge admits soft morning light that washes the interior surfaces and visually lifts the roof plane.⁣

The intervention reads as an inhabited roofline, a quiet pavilion set within foliage and sky.⁣

Workshops, rehearsals, conversations, and quiet moments of pause unfold within the same continuous room. Without fixed arrangements, the space shifts easily with the rhythms of practice, allowing it to grow and evolve with the people who inhabit it. Soft light filters through the clerestory above, while the pitched roof introduces height and openness, gently framing movement within the space.⁣

The room becomes a quiet backdrop for practice, gathering, and shared exploration.⁣

Morii Dero, a vision by Morii, takes form as a tent that can be entered and lived within, where textiles are encountered through movement, pause, and proximity. Designed to assemble, move, and return elsewhere, it is capable of adapting across sites as a space for gathering and engagement.⁣

The Commons Table began with an image familiar to Mumbai: a person on the phone in a moving train—hundreds around them, yet each in their own bubble. Everyone alone together, multitasking through motion, coexisting in parallel worlds. This became our entry into Mumbai Transcripts.⁣

The pavilion stages this condition. People sit close but angled apart; proximity and privacy in quiet tension. You notice others in your periphery yet remain in your own interior world. It works like a small compartment of the city—allowing listening and looking without intrusion.⁣

On the NCPA lawns for ADFF:STIR, supported by Jaquar, it shifted through the day: a shaded commons, an informal forum, a viewing chamber for sound and light, or simply a diagonal passage across the grounds. Open-ended and porous, it made space for both motion and pause.⁣

This was shortlisted among the top 15 practices. While it wasn’t among the final 10 selected for realisation, we’re grateful to be a part of this so far.⁣

A single occupancy house designed for a potter sits on closely knit plotted land in the outskirts of Auroville. The 30×50 ft side, with three neighboring plots and a few more across the north road, boasts six predominant trees. Two large teak trees, with the larger one at the heart of the site, two Kadamb trees on the west edge of the plot, and some young Neem trees.

The functions of the house anchor to these trees, while the semi-open spaces bind them all together. Low-height walls containing the trees form the extension of the built spaces.
Various roof options were explored with the key intent to bring the sense of the central tree within the main space. The 4 m wide half-vaulted roof opens up to the court, making the tree one with the space.

The contorted corridor makes space for the teak tree to stand tall while functionally forming extensions to each corresponding space and connecting them to each other. Traces of the ways of work and life of Golden Bridge Pottery and Pondicherry respectively find their traces in the aspirations and thus the design process.

A simple, modest, open-planning house, along with a small potter's studio, is tied by the court on the ground. An open access way to the first floor and the terrace allows for renting out the top space, as is commonly seen in the locality.

As we get closer to the finish line, is bringing their design flair to the table, making sure everything comes together seamlessly while also being our constant eyes on the site.

As we approach the completion and finishing phase, a collaborative process between clay art and the built environment will come into play!
