Mountain climbers brave enough to take on the Via Ferrata Ivano Dibona in the Italian Dolomites are treated to many memorable sights, including that of a unique structure embedded in the side of a vertical rockface. The iconic location, known as Buffa di Perrero, is believed to be a shelter built by Italian soldiers during World War I. It features brick walls, a slanted roof, two doorways, and four windows framed in wood. It’s hard to believe, but someone had to carry all those building materials up the side of the mountain, as there is no backdoor to an easier access route.
Multiple refuges like the one on Monte Cristallo were built during the armed conflict between the Italians and Austro-Hungarians known as The White War. Both sides pummeled the Dolomites with artillery, triggering avalanches and hunting the enemy from afar. They used rope ladders and cableways to access hard-to-reach locations like the one of this very shelter, to stock supplies and hide from the enemy and the merciless natural elements.
If you’re wondering what the inside of this isolated mountain shelter looks like, it’s nothing special. It’s just a narrow space lined with wood and featuring a bunch of wooden chairs. A large whirlpool forms inside a 70-foot diameter acrylic bowl and falls 2 stories to a pool below. The artwork, functions as both a skylight and a rain collector. The rain water is recycled back to the whirlpool and also fills a canal that runs through the atrium. The pumps that direct water into the bowl are turned on and off a few times an hour so the whirlpool is always changing in shape and intensity. At peak flow rates there are 8000 gallons per minute falling through the atrium and 200 tons of water swirling around in the bowl. Extensive prototyping and engineering went into integrating the artwork into the structural and mechanical systems of the building. 🎥:

On stepping in to this mirror #house, you find yourself greeted with the green couch that is comfortable enough and gives you the feeling of abundance. The asymmetric white low platform furniture blends well. Imagine having fun board games with your favorite people. A large LED is all set for the endless action thriller movie nights. An off-white rounded table with a cylinder-shaped balance is beautiful and proportionate to balance all the elements in this setting. The symmetrically shaped flooring is also a noteworthy addition by the designer. With the grey carpet under the couch, the place fills itself with grace and softness. The ceiling with wooden touch gives a rough texture to the area deliberating the bare minimum spotlights from the upper head.
The charcoal black buffet looks exceptional with the minimalistic white chair in the dining area. The other end having an elevated board with raw wood finish also goes well with the white chairs. Whether, it's a brief conversation, a meditative read, or maybe a little work in the office, this corner is perfect. Working here would fill us with great ideas.
