Growing in prestige in the following decades, the club commissioned famed architect William LeBaron Jenney in 1886 to design their new clubhouse at the southwest corner of Jackson Boulevard and Dearborn Street. In spite of its grandeur, the facility had grown woefully outdated by the 1920s. This incurred a new, larger facility to be built, beginning in 1925 and wrapping up the following year.
Firm Mundie & Jensen channeled the prestigious homes of the Gold Coast for the Union League’s new, 20-story Georgian Revival clubhouse. With a limestone base, the remaining facade is comprised of warm, brown brick. A grid of small windows are interrupted by telescoping ones, likely punctuating the club’s multiple ballrooms. Other amenities include guest suites, dining rooms, libraries, and more. Today, Chicago’s Union League is one of the most active in the country.

The Edgewater Beach Apartment Building is definitely prettier in pink. Designed in 1928 by Benjamin Marshall to give visitors a sense they were on a lavish vacation in the Mediterranean!
