Press release excerpt: “In times when cultural education is being globally defunded, undermined, co-opted, and surveilled, Skinny Dipping presents a group exhibition of artist-teachers, an alternative yet complex career combo in today’s highly driven market-based art world. The exhibition brings together artists from diverse backgrounds, each one actively involved in both fields, questioning and pushing the limits of the arts and education.
Great teachers open minds and world views, modifying the life paths of many. Through day-to-day resistance and patience, they teach empathy and sensibility, from understanding color and its possibilities to working with different materials and techniques to being aware of their multiple origins and contexts: the social, political, and historical implications behind the visual.
The title of the exhibition, One Hundred Children Waiting for a Train, is borrowed from Cien niños esperando un tren, a 1988 documentary from Chilean filmmaker Ignacio Agüero, which is based on the teachings of Alicia Vega, a film educator who has dedicated her life to working with children from marginalized neighborhoods in Chile. Vega, who is still active at 94 years old, is a promoter of film appreciation as a method of social transformation, and the documentary, which will be projected as a complement to the exhibition, was filmed at the end of the US-backed dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990).”

Panel on anti-fascist solidarities in institutions of higher learning*. With Maria Hlavajová,,
Art schools and art institutions pride themselves in their internationality. At the same time, they’re often structurally unprepared to foster a supportive student/faculty life for all. In current fascization dynamics, art schools also have become targets of political repression and austerity politics and students have faced criminalization for expressing solidarity with people facing war, climate catastrophe, racist violence, genocide, or crimes against humanity. Art schools and other institutions of higher learning and their faculty have largely failed to support their students against these acts of aggression in meaningful ways.
In what sense can these dynamics be analyzed as part of current “recalibrations of white supremacy” (Lentin)? And how can people working or studying at institutions such as art schools create spaces of anti-fascist practice? In what ways can artistic performative practices contribute to these spaces?
Through March 29th, 2026.

✨ Evidence from The Museum of Soft Labour by donna Kukama
A series of five non-identical limited edition artworks derived from The Museum of Soft Labour, a 2025 performance by donna Kukama. The performance took the guise of a guided tour addressing various forms of labour directly or indirectly related to the city of Rotterdam, focusing on forms of labour that have often been overlooked and undervalued throughout history. The Museum of Soft Labour dignified the unseen contributions that shaped the city and honoured the breaths and memories of those whose labour was never a choice.
✨ Sixteen Conversations on Abstraction Tool Two (Clock) by Riet Wijnen
On this green ceramic clock with sixteen digits, the 24-hour timekeeping system, often used for digital clocks, slips into the analog 12-hour clock system: the digit ‘16’ is placed at 4 o’clock. These time systems are often so deeply ingrained in our bodies that we no longer recognize these abstract constructs as tools. This subtle slippage opens up the rigid systems designed for us to live according to the clock.

At Art Rotterdam 2026, Kunstinstituut Melly presents Evidence from The Museum of Soft Labour, a series of five non-identical limited edition artworks by donna Kukama, whose solo exhibition I Breathe, You Breathe is on view at Melly until Sunday.
These artworks are derived from The Museum of Soft Labour, a 2025 performance by donna Kukama.
This series of non-identical editions is evidence of donna’s approach to documenting her performances, in which memory is reconfigured into other forms, including sculpture. For her, documentation is creation. Through the transformation of what was spoken and seen, donna alchemises the unscripted, often “missed” moments in her work to result in miniature monuments. Rather than a recording of the event, these artworks present “evidence” of potential past and future memories.
Titles of the editions
1) The Troubled Bubble
2) The Corner for Calm Coexistence
3) The Massage Table for Exploitative Types
4) Hundreds of Years of Colourful Underpaid Labour
5) The Memorial for Those Whose Labour Was Neither a Choice Nor a Calling

Discover two decades of donna Kukama’s work in her first solo exhibition in the Netherlands. I Breathe, You Breathe brings together donna Kukama’s sound, videos, paintings, drawings, sculptures, and performance documentation spanning two decades of her artistic practice. Approaching history as a living and breathing body, donna invites us to breathe in the company of lesser-known stories, reimagine what it means to write a historical text, and to fluidly inhabit spaces of contradiction, plurality, and becoming, reflecting and mirroring the messiness of history.
Whose histories do we carry and how do they live in us?

Between the Hill and the Sea é geografia simbolica: corpo, migrazione, storia e paesaggio si intrecciano in un rituale di ascesa e discesa.
Seta, vento e acqua costruiscono un’azione che resiste allo spettacolo e restituisce complessità al racconto dei movimenti umani.

We have just returned from an exciting studio visit: Together with our members, we had the opportunity to take a look inside the studio of donna Kukama, Professor of Contemporary Art / Global South at the Cologne Academy of Media Arts. Through performances, painting, sculpture, video, text, sound, and multimedia installations, the artist conveys multifaceted possibilities for expanding a Eurocentric view of art, thereby opening up a new perspective on things. Thank you very much for your hospitality!
