I saw this today and sent it to a friend who is navigating a lot of personal challenges. We often share what it’s like to navigate grief and chronic illness while also trying to function in daily life. I often think back to young 19 year old homeless me and one very specific late afternoon/evening. It must have been either late fall or early spring in Massachusetts because it wasn’t that late but it was dusky and just on that edge of being cold enough to feel your muscles bracing against the air. I was waiting on a platform for the train back to Boston from my weekend job at the Emerald Square Mall. The roof of the little waiting areas on the platforms were made of what looked like those interlocking terracotta clay tiles. I held up my fingers like a viewfinder in a camera and I looked just at the roofline on the opposing track and the sky stretching behind. I pretended I was older and on a vacation in Japan just glimpsing across the roof of a temple or a tea house. I pretended I wasn’t cold, my life was okay and I had a home and my own family and work I felt okay doing. I did that to try to ignore the cold until the train came. I imagined twisting pines and lily pads in a Japanese garden, eating bowls of steaming noodle soup and watching paper lanterns move with the breeze and what it might be like to see really beautiful kimonos up close in a shop. I often think of that young girl, I often still feel I’m on that platform in some way and believe some sliver of my soul is still there. She was yearning for something different so hard. It’s been over 25 years since that afternoon and my heart still heaves because that younger me did make a better life, then I got knocked back down and now I have to do it again. I have no doubt that the 80 year old version of me (should I live that long) may remember some specific moments of this transition in Melbourne the same way. With pain but also with some reverence and also so much love and admiration for how much hope she had even when things were in a gutter. Which is to say, even when things are hanging by a thread, hope is powerful. Tiny glacial incremental movements and tiny grains of hope are very powerful. ❤️
I am not sure how to process the election results and what a second Trump term means down to its most granular level because that’s a dissertation all on its own. This slide-set by really encapsulates the baseline I keep coming back to between overwhelm and disassociation from the reality of the moment. We all need to give ourselves space and grace to feel allllll of this expected grief and rage. The next four years and beyond is now about resistance to everything that’s coming down the pipeline- whether he dismantles every type of protection- from healthcare to the EPA and FDA and everything else in between. I have no words of comfort, we knew this was a possibility and it’s here. We can take some time to breathe and then we get serious about strategy around resistance and building community and establishing further mutual aid cause fuck knows we are gonna need that.
Civilians want the all the vibes, fashion and knowledge of SWers but none of the reality of actual life in that demographic.
This slide set from says so much. Let them sit with trepidation for once. You don’t try that hard for centuries and centuries to control and subjugate people you’re not afraid posses a power you will never embody. The patriarchy and all its little shit bird messengers have been terrified the whole time. This post really has its main lens on feminism but when you consider the often added intersections of race, class, etc it creates an even hotter fire of sacred rage. Set notice. Be unhinged if necessary. It’s okay to unleash the beast when it’s called for. It’s actually vital to do so.
A simple truth
Pride is so personal and we all celebrate in a multitude of ways…love this image from. This year, I’m in Melbourne and I don’t really have the established and vibrant queer community I had in NYC. It feels really lonely if I’m going to be honest, but I moved back to Australia to build a new life and move toward new dreams. It took me so long to acknowledge my queerness and live with authenticity. There was a lot of trepidation and fear. I feel that too now as I’m struggling to build this new life here. There is a small voice inside that reminds me I’ve moved mountains before, that being afraid and still pursuing a goal is nothing new to me. I desperately miss my friends and LGBTQIA2S+ community in NYC. I wish I could be on those steps where the Dyke March raucously kicks off and joyfully connect with random acquaintances on the slow but pulsing walk to Washington Square. But I can’t be there this year bc I’m here, trying to build something new. Something I unfortunately could not do in NYC with how my life changed in 2023. Growing pains. Grief. Hope sometimes too. I came out late and looked back often wishing I’d done it sooner. I pursued a career I thought I “should” for a long time when my passion and mission in life were entirely different. I want my dreams to happen yesterday but they take time. Even if I came out late in life, I got here and my heart swells with a warm recognition of what feels “right”. I am so grateful to be queer. #pridemonth #pride🌈 #queerpride #lgbtqia #pridemonth2024
Fantastic slide set from regarding Pride celebrations….whether this is your debut or you’ve been attending for years. There are such solid and compassionate suggestions here. I hope you all have a beautiful experience this year and find ways to feel the love and validation within community. #pride #pridemonth2024 #queerpride #queerlove #queercommunity 🌈
This poignant and well expressed slide set by really frames the massive storm of global grief and pain. How do we show up in spaces? How do we move toward collective liberation while also navigating debilitating grief, anxiety and pain? How do we listen to and prioritize the expressed needs of communities and individuals in most need when we ourselves feel worn down to the bone? How do we manage our bandwidth to keep showing up? Slow and steady so we can continue- is this the only way? Weaving activist movements together so energy is constant even if individuals can not themselves be constant?
I posted this slide set from in my stories today but I’m making it a permanent post because this is important information. The SW rights movement needs allies but only if they support in a way that’s respectful of SWers. #rightsnotrescue #decrimnow
Is this one of the most fitting gifts I’ve received in a long time? Yes, yes it is. “It so captures two major aspects of your personality” -. My love of research, cost analysis and project planning runs DEEP #freakinthesheets #excel #givemethenumbers #wherearemyreports
