Really excited to be speaking on a panel for Sauna Summit 2026, which is bringing together sauna operators, practitioners, researchers from across the UK and abroad to discuss all things Sauna: its rapid recent growth in the UK, impact on the local community, social connection, mental & physical health benefits, and much more! đŸ§–đŸœâ€â™‚ïž

I will be outlining some of the mechanisms underlying the health benefits of sauna, as well as how it ties into social prescribing across the UK and the NHS.

Below is my favourite seaside sauna from when I lived right on the seafront last year in Folkestone/Sandgate - I'm back in London now, which fortunately also has many epic sauna spots - but "contrast therapy"ing between that sauna and the sea every 15 minutes, with the white cliffs of France visible across the water, really was special 🌊

Some reflections on leaving medical training. Hope this resonates for you whether or not you're a doctor, in the helping professions, or just facing a difficult (career) choice relating to your identity and values in some way - this stuff is hard, but important đŸ€
Some personal reflections from a recent yoga experience of mine.
Sauna is moving out of the wellness bubble and into the health system. The research is beginning to catch up with what many of us have known for a while: that regular sauna use can have profound mental, physical and social benefits for us.

At Sauna Summit 2026, one of our most anticipated sessions brings together exciting people working in the health care system in the UK to share their perspective on how operators can reach the people who would benefit from sauna the most.

Panel Discussion: Widening access to sauna through the health system

đŸ©ș Dr Henry Aughterson - Social Prescribing PhD and researcher, UCL & Queen Mary University London, Resident Doctor NHS
đŸ©ș Dr Jane Packer - GP in the Prison Service, specialist in lifestyle medicine and chronic pain
đŸ©ș Dr Gillian Stokes - Professor (Associate) of Inclusive Research, UCL, founder of Sauna Mamas
đŸ©ș Kate Rawson, Founder of Sauna Pause and Sauna & Menopause Advocate

Moderated by Gabrielle Reason, Director British Sauna Society

In our discussion with these researchers, clinicians, and practitioners, we'll gain a unique perspective on real-world problems that our healthcare system and public struggle with, providing inspiration and networking opportunities for the sauna owners and practitioners who want to create supportive sauna sessions for local communities.

Tickets are now publicly available for the Sauna Summit 2026 taking place in Brighton on 1 June. Access them at the link in our bio.
I cannot recommend more Daisy Fancourt's new phenomenal book 'Art Cure', which is without a doubt the most extensive and well researched book to date on the evidence base underlying the impact of the Arts on mental and physical health - whether that's through dance, theatre, exhibitions, singing, painting, etc.

I'm so proud to have some of my research with Daisy and other colleagues Saoirse Finn, Emma Walker and Andrew Steptoe on mechanisms underlying leisure activities actively informing some of the theoretical underpinnings in the book.

Daisy is leading the field in developing the evidence base for Arts on health (which is now substantial) and has been for many years. Alongside being a phenomenal academic, she is also a wonderful person who cares so deeply about this work. It was such a privilege to have had her as my PhD supervisor and - after a small research hiatus to focus on my clinical training - to be beginning work together again in this space.

SHARE with someone who you think will love this book and pop me a FOLLOW if you're interested in more content on the evidence base for creative, arts & community activities in supporting mental health đŸ€

I always find these convos so interesting because it’s not about “doctors are wrong”, it’s more like the system isn’t really set up to look at the full picture.

I sat down with a to talk about why so many people (especially women) feel like something isn’t right
but keep getting told they’re fine.

We got into:
– 10 minute GP appointments and why they barely scratch the surface
– why lifestyle + social factors are often missed
– women’s health, endo, autoimmune stuff & how much we still don’t fully understand
– why people end up going round in circles with their health
- tools that can actually help us feel better (including chat about habits)

we spoke about habits, identity, slowing down
and why a lot of us are actually just completely disconnected from ourselves

There was a bit where we spoke about how we’re basically just “patching people up” and sending them back out into the same environment that made them unwell in the first place and it’s a convo i’d love your thoughts on too - yano like the pill for period problems or antidepressants for loneliness?

This convo made me respect how hard doctor’s job is even more but also made me realise how much responsibility we have to actually understand our own bodies too

Such a good convo this one đŸ€ Thank you Henry!
A quote from the legend Alan Watts on meaning. It's a powerful one for me. Would love to hear your thoughts 💭
A post on privilege in the doctor/medical profession. The government needs to do so much more on this.

Shout out to and for the work they do in this area
