As a third year resident doctor, I decided to spend this year to work on my scholarly project on EDM culture and its parallels with psychiatric practice/mental health treatment.
Today’s topic? ✨ Mindfulness ✨
When people think about mindfulness, we may automatically think about being still or calm or being in a quiet environment or doing breath work, and while many of these practices can be great ways to practice mindfulness, did you know that mindfulness can look very different.
Mindfulness is being able to observe, describe, and participate in an activity that helps you center yourself and help you feel present in the moment. For me, headbanging with my friends and total strangers to was the perfect way I was able to be mindful and be truly present and immersed in the moment. No thinking about my to do list, my work responsibilities, and life responsibilities.. just moving my body in a way that feels right and freeing.
So in a nutshell, yeah, you should headbang at your next bass heavy show, doctor’s orders
So if you’re in the trenches of medical school and everything seems super bleak - it low key probably is and I’m super sorry. BUT if someone told me that in 3 years I would feel like this about my life and the career ahead, I wouldn’t have believed them. So if anything, here’s some motivation that it will get better and my advice? Surround yourself with people that make you feel happy… maybe go to an EDM show and meet your future best friends that turn your life around (more on this later 😉)

In 2025 I became an aunt, I crossed 10K on insta 🥳, and I got spend such great quality time with my family and friends (more so the second half of the year when I became a pgy3)!
