Many young surgeons mistakenly think that having “fast hands” is the most important skill for being efficient in the operating room. While dexterity is certainly important, what truly makes a surgeon efficient is their understanding of anatomy. Knowing when one can safely move quickly, and when one needs to really slow down and be very meticulous, is directly related to a surgeon’s grasp of the practical anatomy. A truly efficient (and safe) surgeon relies more on their brain, their studies, and their experience over their technical prowess.
