I’ve been photographing Hamburg for a little over five years now. And I find it hard to put into words what the Elbe, the harbor, and the hustle and bustle of the city mean to me. That’s why I’m trying to explain with some of my favorite shots from the past few years.

Nachdem ich die ersten Pixel Stretching Serien gesehen habe, wusste ich, dass ich diesen Trend auch unbedingt ausprobieren muss. Und es macht unglaublich Spaß, seinen Bildern in das besondere Etwas mit diesem Trend mitzugeben. Auch wenn es wie im Original mit Autos in meinen Augen noch einen Tick interessanter ist, bin ich gespannt, was ihr von meinem ersten Versuch haltet!

After seeing the first pixel stretching series, I knew I absolutely had to give this trend a go. And it’s incredibly fun to give your images that special something in Adobe Photoshop using this technique. Even though I think it looks just a touch more interesting with cars, as in the original, I’m curious to hear what you think of my first attempt!

Es ist schon eine ganze Weile her, als ich mich nach meiner letzten Look Up Serie aus Berlin gefragt habe, welche Spots wir hier eigentlich in Hamburg haben, denn mir sind immer wieder nur die beiden Klassiker Sprinkenhof und das Parkhaus am Rödingsmarkt in den Sinn gekommen. Aber wenn man sich mal ein wenig damit beschäftigt, gibt es unzählige architektonische Fotospots in Hamburg, bei denen ein Blick nach oben lohnt.

It’s been quite a while since my last Look Up series from Berlin that I started wondering what sort of spots we actually have here in Hamburg, as the only two that kept coming to mind were the classic Sprinkenhof and the car park at Rödingsmarkt. But if you take a bit of time to look into it, there are countless architectural photo spots in Hamburg where it’s well worth looking up.

Normalerweise liebe ich es, Städte zu fotografieren und deren Stories zu erzählen. Aber als ich vor einigen Jahren das erste Mal Shots von diesem Spot gesehen habe, wusste ich, dass ich irgendwann selbst einmal hin möchte. Und deshalb bin ich mitten in der Nacht in den von Hamburg knapp zwei Stunden entfernten Gespensterwald Nienhagen gefahren. Kein Stadtlärm, kein Verkehr; nur Stille, ein entferntes Rauschen der Ostsee und diese magische goldene Stunde. Ich weiß gar nicht, ob man ohne Kamera in der Hand genauso fühlt, aber ich persönlich empfinde immer eine unglaubliche Glückseligkeit, wenn ich solch ein Licht habe. Und dafür würde ich immer wieder um 02:30 losfahren.

I usually love photographing cities and telling their stories. But when I first saw photos of this spot a few years ago, I knew I’d want to visit it myself one day. And so, in the middle of the night, I drove to the Nienhagen Ghost Forest, just under two hours from Hamburg. No city noise, no traffic; just silence, the distant murmur of the Baltic Sea and that magical golden hour. I don’t know if you’d feel the same without a camera in your hand, but personally I always feel an incredible sense of bliss when I’m bathed in light like that. And for that, I’d set off at 2.30 am time and time again.

Ein kleines Highlight für Groß und Klein etwas außerhalb des Zentrums: Superkilen! Wer etwas für führende Linien übrig hat, wird hier auf jeden Fall glücklich. Habe ich irgendeinen Spot verpasst, den ich nächstes Mal nachholen sollte?

Aside from the colourful facades of the old harbour district of Nyhavn, there is plenty more architecture in Copenhagen that stands out and is perfect for capturing on camera. I’m particularly taken with the Kaktus Towers, and I drew inspiration from Demas for the cover photo. But other buildings, such as the Axel Towers or Locke Copenhagen, also blend harmoniously into Copenhagen’s cityscape.

A little gem for young and old just outside the city centre: Superkilen! Anyone with a penchant for leading lines will definitely be in their element here. Have I missed any spots that I should check out next time?

Nyhavn ist der meistfotografierte Spot
in Kopenhagen. Und vielleicht der am wenigsten
verstandene. Denn die meisten Menschen sehen nur das Postkartenmotiv: Bunte Fassaden, Boote, Spiegelungen. Das perfekte Foto.

Aber ich wollte gemeinsam mit herausfinden, ob das alles ist. Also ging mein Wecker um 03:45 Uhr.

Dort angekommen, sahen wir, dass Nyhavn auch der Ort ist, an dem Jugendliche bei einem Snack die Nacht ausklingen lassen. Der die Kopenhagener selbst die Kamera zücken lässt, wenn das goldene Licht auf das Wasser trifft. Wo man am Morgen seinen Seelenfrieden finden kann. Und es schlussendlich ein Ort ist, den Menschen ihr Zuhause nennen dürfen.

Ja, auch uns haben die bunten Fassaden fasziniert; aber Nyhavn ist so viel mehr als nur ein touristischer Hotspot. Wenn Du schon mal in Kopenhagen warst: Welche Seite von Nyhavn hast Du gesehen?

Nyhavn is the most photographed Spot
in Copenhagen. And perhaps the least
understood. Because most people only see the postcard view: colourful facades, boats, reflections. The perfect photo.
.
But Nico and I wanted to find out if there is more. So I set my alarm for 3:45 am.
.
Once we arrived, we saw that Nyhavn is also the place where young people wind down the evening with a snack. It’s the place that makes even the locals reach for their cameras when the golden light hits the water. It’s where you can find peace of mind in the morning. And, ultimately, it’s a place that people can call home.
.
Yes, we too were fascinated by the colourful facades; but Nyhavn is so much more than just a tourist hotspot. If you’ve ever been to Copenhagen: which side of Nyhavn did you see?

Für mich ist das Framing als Kompositionen in der Fotografie eines der einfachsten Mittel, um den Blick zu lenken und sein Bild interessanter wirken zu lassen. Statt einfach nur das Motiv zu fotografieren, solltet ihr nach einem Rahmen für euer Motiv schauen. Dabei kann der Frame eigentlich alles mögliche sein. Ein Fensterrahmen, Türen, Linien oder natürliche Elemente lenken den Blick direkt auf das Motiv und können perfekt Fokus und Tiefe erzeugen.

Für mich hat Framing meinen Blick auf die Fotografie und meine Motive komplett verändert und mit der Zeit sucht das Auge ganz automatisch nach spannenden Perspektiven. Wie sieht’s bei euch aus? Was ist eure liebste Kompositionsregel?

For me, framing as a compositional technique in photography is one of the simplest ways to guide the viewer’s gaze and make your image more interesting. Instead of simply photographing the subject, you should look for a frame for it. The frame can actually be just about anything. Window frames, doors, lines or natural elements draw the eye directly to the subject and are perfect for creating focus and depth.

For me, framing has completely changed the way I look at photography and my subjects, and over time, the eye automatically starts searching for interesting perspectives. How about you? What’s your favourite rule of composition?

10 Jahre lang darf ich Hamburg jetzt schon mein Zuhause nennen. Und ich denke, Hamburg hat sich in diesem Jahr seinen eigenen Rückblick verdient.
.
Egal, ob es der Nebel im Januar war, die Klassiker wie die Kirschblüte und der Hafengeburtstag oder die perfekten Momente mit einer spiegelglatten Elbe im Sommer oder dem Sonnenball zwischen den Pfeilern der Köhlbrandbrücke.
.
Mittlerweile habe ich immer mal wieder das Gefühl, alles in Hamburg gesehen zu haben, aber dann kommt wieder einer dieser besonderen Momente und ich verliebe mich neu in die Stadt. Ich hoffe, dass bleibt noch lange so und bis dahin wünsche ich euch einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr und drückt die Daumen für eine ordentliche Portion Schnee zum Start ins Jahr!

I’ve been able to call Hamburg my home for 10 years now. And I think Hamburg deserves its own review this year.

Whether it was the fog in January, the classics such as the cherry blossoms and the harbor birthday, or the perfect moments with a mirror-smooth Elbe in summer or the sun ball between the pillars of the Köhlbrandbrücke.

By now, I often feel like I’ve seen everything in Hamburg, but then one of those special moments comes along and I fall in love with the city all over again. I hope it stays that way for a long time to come, and until then, I wish you all a happy New Year and keep your fingers crossed for a good dose of snow to start the year!

So langsam neigt sich das Jahr dem Ende entgegen und wieder sind einige tausend Fotos außerhalb Hamburgs dazugekommen.

Hat sich meine Fotografie dieses Jahr verändert? Auf jeden Fall. Aber egal ob es das Jagen des goldenen Lichts in Berlin oder Köln war, die verregneten Momente in New York City oder London, Architektur in Antwerpen oder die Natur auf Teneriffa; es sind Fotos, die mir zeigen, dass es nicht die eine Nische ist, die mich fasziniert, sondern dass es die Fotografie an sich ist. Was ich aber hervorheben muss, ist die Berliner Community. Wie herzlich ich dort bei meinem letzten Trip in die Hauptstadt aufgenommen wurde, ist wirklich toll gewesen. Danke dafür!

The year is slowly coming to an end, and once again, several thousand photos taken outside Hamburg have been added to my collection.
.
Has my photography changed this year? Definitely. But whether it was chasing the golden light in Berlin or Cologne, the rainy moments in New York City or London, architecture in Antwerp or nature in Tenerife, these are photos that show me that it’s not one niche that fascinates me, but photography itself.
.
But what I really have to point out is the Berlin community. The warm welcome I received there on my last trip to the capital was truly wonderful. Thank you for that!
