On our second day skiing in the Ogden Valley area, we visited with. Our family loved the wide open groomed trails, as well as ample powder tree runs. This might just be our favorite Utah ski resort so far! Our kids’ especially loved a section called Woody’s World and have already asked us when we can ski there again.
Some info to help plan your trip to Powder Mountain (aka “Pow Mow”)
-It is located 55 miles from the Salt Lake City International Airport with free parking.
- With over 8,000 acres of skiable terrain, Powder Mountain is one of North America’s largest ski areas.
- This is the place to find endless powder or untouched corduroy.
- 2,800 acres of lift-served terrain. An additional 1,200 acres are serviced by their Powder Country Shuttle and 700 acres are accessed via the Lightning Ridge Snowcat Ride. The remaining acres can be accessed via backcountry tours.
- Pow Mow has a day ticket limit of 1,500 tickets, so it is NEVER crowded! Be sure your reserve your ticket in advance, because it tends to sell out!
- The summit elevation of 9,422 feet delivers 2,205 feet of lift-served vertical.
- The mountain receives over 500 inches of snow annually
- Pow Mow has special offerings for beginner skiers, youth and women.

With the parking lot closed and having to park at the Desolation Trailhead, it ended up being 7.35 miles RT and 2650 vertical feet. This is definitely the hardest hike I’ve done since September and perhaps the 3rd toughest since my breathing issues started again in November 2021. When I was in shape, this wasn’t a difficult hike but I am learning to appreciate these once “easy” hikes more.

Day 3/3, the W trek: Torres del Paine trail (from ecocamp), 16 miles, 4,000 feet elevation gain
What my mom wanted for me growing up was to go to school, to have financial security, and to explore the potential I clearly showed as a little girl through education.
I was always encouraged to find a way to fund my life, but nobody ever taught me how to live it, and despite that- no, because of that- I have been able to dream my own dreams.
Privilege is often mistaken as coming from a family of doctors and lawyers, having someone to guide you to a profession, and being handed the definition of an ideal life.
I didn’t have that. But what I did have was the opportunity to paint my own canvas, and dream bigger than any blueprint they could’ve given me. 🕊
My mom and I made it to the summit slightly slower than everyone else, but we arrived, like I knew we would.
Any body that is not sick, or injured is capable of trekking mountains, and I stand by that, after 4 world treks that have firmly educated my insecurities with experience.
Failure has nothing to do with not reaching the top, so much as it has to do with not reaching the trailhead. Whether we got to the summit, or not, in choosing ourselves, and finding a way there at all, we had already conquered the more challenging mountain.
This was the last of 4 world treks I had been aiming to complete in a year, and there was no better way for me to finish than with my mom climbing the ladder behind me. We never traveled like this growing up, and it’s the best reward to end the journey connecting my past to this present.
I hope women of our generations, especially from immigrant and first gen backgrounds, are reminded that they can imagine and achieve beyond all limits. Really- as Latinas, we fight some of the most degrading stereotypes, and every story is another step towards reclaiming our dignity in this society that doesn’t know how far we can fly.
I’m so proud to wave my flag as a Salvadorian American in all that I do- and I thank God the timing fell on me to spread our wings and take the diaspora even further.

“ I always love trying new things. At first, the idea of doing a train ride was kind of boring. But after watching a video, I decided it may be worth doing.
The Durango-Silverton Train follows a 46 mile track between the two towns in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. We opted to do the half day train ride, as a 9 hour train ride on an old steam locomotive didn’t seem all too comfortable. This train isn’t designed for luxury but moreso for the old school experience. We did the open gondola cart and it was well worth it!
This reel is a highlight of the most scenic 5 minute long section.
Two options in the future would be to do this in the winter (only indoor seating) which would be magical or doing the full 46 miles to Silverton but taking a shuttle back to the car. That way it’s only a 5 hour train ride one way rather than 9 hours round trip.

When I’m hiking with my kids, I try to keep our gears light but practical. Here are a few items I’d pack for a hiking trip with my (big) toddler.

The wind in Patagonia was so wild, I could have literally laid down at a perpendicular angle. It wasn’t all day every day, but it had it’s apocalyptic moments, and some sections, especially by the water, felt like they could’ve blown me all the way back to Kilimanjaro. People’s pack covers would fly all over the place (don’t bring one when you come to Patagonia, use a liner on the inside of your pack instead!), and I even saw some dude make an epic dive to keep his from going into the water.
I missed the wind memo, but I did come prepared for one other thing. One show of improvement on this journey I’m on of entering new spaces and learning humbly as an adult- I had rain pants! Unlike my situation in the cold and rain on Kili, where I froze my ass off. Even though Patagonia wasn’t as chilly, it was still rainy, and I didn’t want to be caught in a downpour for 3 hours again with wet clothes on a moody mountain.
The only size they had left at the shop was a little big for me, but it worked out, because when the wind showed up, these thighs did, too. The wind was not working me, I was working the wind, and I could’ve caught flight with these extra wings if I wanted to 🕊.

I’ve been feeling pretty depressed for the past couple of weeks, which for me manifested as feeling lethargic, crying, and being unable to focus. The uncertainty of what lies ahead for my dad and the things we need to plan for have felt overwhelming. I tend to close myself off when I feel depressed and my sister always does a great job of reminding me that we don’t have to go at it alone.
With all of the recent rain we’ve had, all of the camping trips we had lined up needed to be canceled. Even though I can’t get away to decompress in the way that I would like, I can still carve out time for myself here. So I picked a trail that was new to me and took my sister along since she’s in town visiting. A morning spent outside can provide so much relief. Gracias madre tierra 💜 🌱 “

POV: Attempting powder/ tree skiing from a 43 yo mom perspective 😭 😆 😅 #allthefeels 🎢
I hesitated to share this clip of me panicking and having a melt down as I navigated through terrain and textures I wasn’t used to. It’s not glamorous, nor aspirational. But it is real and hopefully, relatable for some.
When I’ve asked in my stories why some don’t ski, many have responded: fear. Fear of falling, fear of getting hurt, fear of heights…
I share those fears, and am a risk adverse person. I’ve had a phobia of steepness (I don’t like rollercoasters either) since the first time I skied as a kid and had my first panic attack looking over the edge wondering “how am I going to make it down?!” 🥺
But here’s the thing. I made it down that hill. And I made it down this one too. And what I’ve learned along the way, is that:
1) good coaching and guiding is important (I strongly recommended lessons to get started and the a patient and supportive partner/ friend)
2) maybe I should stick to groomers. Lol
Seriously though, I almost gave up on skiing because of my fears, but gave it another chance as an adult when I became a mom and saw how much my husband and kids enjoy it. I’m glad I’ve stuck with it (though I do know my limits) as we’ve shared so many winter memories and continue to make them together ⛷️ ❄️❤️
