All the good landscape photographers know right where to go. They know when to arrive as well: unpacking their equipment and calibrating the dials. When the sun kisses the horizon they release their shutters, capturing exquisite scenery and drama.

Unfortunately, I’m not there with them. I’m too easily distracted: chasing the next bend in the canyon, or another crest on the ridge. When golden hour catches up, I’m nowhere: a random confluence of arroyos, another dead-end box canyon. One of the in-between places.

Over the years I’ve learned that these places have their own kind of magic. It’s something wild and lonesome. Despite all my attempts, the unique character of these places never survives the translation to pixels. It’s out there though. Look for the in-between places, and you’ll find it.

Reports of my Insta-demise are grossly exaggerated! Life has been busy delivering surprises, as it so often does. Thanks to everyone for hanging around. I'll be back to posting more regularly in the not-so-distant future!

Stone walls constrained my gaze through a dimming serpentine aperture. It's strange that such a narrow window in time and space makes the world feel immense. It seems like the whole vast universe with all its monstrous uncertainty seeps out through the cracks.

On the second day we left the trail behind. We sloshed across marshes and skirted around deadfall, traversing one pine-carpeted valley after another and cresting tall ridges in between. Each high point offered spectacular views of the surrounding basins. On the fourth day we topped the final ridge standing between us and our destination. Surveying the surrounding land revealed nothing but unbroken wilderness in every direction. To the north, the central spine of the Uintas receded into the distance.
