Every August for the past 59 years, around 50 authentic horse-drawn carriages have gathered on the grounds of 📍Huis Doorn — the historic estate where the last German Kaiser lived out his final years — and ridden in procession past the castles and country estates of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.
Coachmen in period dress. Horses groomed and dressed in their finest tack. Passengers in clothing matched precisely to their carriage style.
📍 WHERE — Huis Doorn, Doorn, Utrechtse Heuvelrug, Utrecht province. The carriages tour the surrounding castles and country estates of the "Stichtse Lustwarande" — the historic estate region around Doorn.
🚂 HOW — There's no direct train from Amsterdam to Doorn. Take the train Amsterdam Centraal → Driebergen-Zeist (~50 min), then bus 56 towards Wijk bij Duurstede and get off directly at the Huis Doorn stop.

⏰ WHEN — Sunday 16 August 2026. Carriages assemble on the field at Huis Doorn from 9:00am. There is a fairytale theme park hidden in the forests of North Brabant that allegedly inspired Walt Disney to build Disneyland. It has been running since 1952. It has a fairy tale forest that has never closed.
And their newest attraction just won the global theme park industry's equivalent of an Oscar.
It is called Efteling. It is one of the most underrated weekend escapes in the Netherlands. And a surprising number of expats living here have never visited.

🚂 HOW — Train Amsterdam Centraal → → 's-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch) (~1hr, ~€18), then Arriva bus 300 or 301 directly to the Efteling bus stop at the main entrance. Total journey from Amsterdam approximately 2 hours.
By car: 1hr 15min from Amsterdam, parking €15/day — book in advance at.
💶 COST — Entry tickets €40–56 per person depending on your visit date (dynamic pricing — cheaper on weekdays and outside school holidays).
Efteling hotel stays include free unlimited park entry — worth comparing against day ticket + transport costs.
⏰ WHEN — Open 365 days a year. Weekday visits outside Dutch school holidays are significantly cheaper and far less crowded. Best summer visit: arrive at opening time and head straight to Danse Macabre and Baron 1898 (the most popular rides) before queues build.
⭐ DON'T MISS — Danse Macabre: the world's only Dynamic Motion Stage dark ride, housed inside a 20-metre Gothic abbey. 108 visitors sit in haunted choir stalls that spin, tilt and drop to a live orchestral soundtrack. Nothing else like it exists anywhere on Earth. Also: the Sprookjesbos (Fairy Tale Forest) — 30+ living fairy tale dioramas in an ancient woodland, some unchanged since 1952.

One of the most underrated weekend escapes in the Netherlands. And it happens to be on the most iconic circuit in the country — metres from the North Sea.
📍 WHERE — MASCOT Circuit Zandvoort, Burgemeester van Alphenstraat 108, Zandvoort, North Holland. The circuit sits in the sand dunes directly alongside the North Sea beach — one of the most scenic race venues in Europe.
🚂 HOW — Train Amsterdam Centraal → Zandvoort aan Zee (direct, ~30 min).
TIP: No car needed and strongly recommended against — parking around Zandvoort is extremely limited during events.
💶 COST — Day ticket approximately €20- 30 EUr.

⭐ DON'T MISS — The paddock. Unlike modern F1, the Historic Grand Prix gives you direct access to walk among the cars, speak to drivers and get as close as you'll ever get to a vintage Formula 1 machine.
IMPORTANT! Be prepared for long lines to the trains back to Amsterdam after the event!!! It took us 3 hours to finally get back on train.

📍SluisHuis is a 442-apartment building in IJburg, Amsterdam — designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the most celebrated architectural firm in the world, together with Rotterdam-based Barcode Architects. Completed in 2022. 52 metres tall. 35,000m² of total floor area.
