The Committed Generation was a literary group of Latin American writers, poets, and intellectuals that arose in El Salvador in the 1950s that aligned itself with students and workers, and whose aim and commitment was to utilize literature and the arts to build consciousness, challenge power, seek justice, and create a more democratic future for Latin America.
Salvadoran Poets in Solidarity continues that same tradition, showcasing a new generation of Salvadoran poets who carry on the work of their predecessors of speaking truth to power, keeping historical memory alive, re-inventing Salvadoran identity, and promoting a democratic vision for El Salvador.
This reading celebrates three recently published collections: Cipota by Chelsea Guevara, Mercury in Reggaeton by Willy Palomo, and Canicula by William Archila. Guevara, Palomo, and Archila will feature alongside Cynthia Guardado and Janel Pineda.
Event cover and all proceeds will go toward solidarity fundraising.

Join CISPES L.A. in commemorating and honoring the life and work of the unstoppable revolutionary Salvadoran activist and poet, Maria Guardado, on the 11th anniversary of her passing. The evening will consist of a presentation of her organizing journey, her transnational framework, her activism in Los Angeles, and will feature her poems of strength, resilience, resistance and historical memory. Following the presentation, Salvadoran activist, poet, and dear friend of María, Rossana Pérez, will do a special performance of poetry dedicated to María.
Maria Guardado is part of many underrepresented militant Salvadoran women who put their lives on the line for the liberation of their country, and who fought persistently against U.S imperialism, capitalism, and colonization, regardless of their location, through activism and poetry. So please join us in remembering her life and her work in community!
In commemoration of the forthcoming Día de los difuntos, here's a new piece honoring the wisdom that the ancestors impart on us.
