In an oasis valley of the Algerian Sahara lies a collection of seven fortified towns, designed around a highly specific social, religious, and legal order. Architecture here organises community life: the placement of windows regulates privacy, walls and courtyards manage water scarcity, and the urban form itself embeds human settlement directly into the desert environment.🧱💧
The region is perhaps most famous for the recognisable clothing of the women of the Mzab, traditionally dressed in white cloaks that veil the body and reveal only a single eye — unlike anywhere else I’ve encountered.
Seven towns. One valley. A centuries-old urban system where nothing is accidental.🇩🇿
On the eve of Algerian independence in 1962, around 140,000 Jews lived in Algeria.
Today, their public presence has been almost entirely erased: no remaining community infrastructure, and no recognised place in the country’s public memory.
Jews first arrived in North Africa in Antiquity, often as Roman captives from Judea following the destruction of the Second Temple.
Communities were later reshaped by Sephardi Jews expelled from Spain after 1492, whose language, religious practice, and communal institutions profoundly marked Jewish life across the region.
Under Ottoman rule, Jews in Algeria lived as ‘dhimmis’ — legally protected yet subordinate second-class subjects. This status imposed clear constraints: legal inequality, special taxation, and social discrimination. These conditions varied by place. In Ghardaïa, for example, Jews were required to wear black turbans and were forbidden from riding animals; elsewhere, restrictions were looser and everyday integration more common. Despite these limits, dhimmi status also permitted communal autonomy, religious continuity, and internal self-governance — a familiar and, in many contexts, sustainable pattern across Jewish life in Islamic societies.
Algeria’s Jewish experience diverged sharply from that of Jews in other Muslim societies in 1870, with the colonial Crémieux Decree, which granted French citizenship to Algeria’s Jews while excluding Muslim Algerians.
This legal rupture transformed Jewish life decisively. Access to education, civic rights, and economic mobility expanded, and by the 1900s, French rule - for all its contradictions - offered freedoms, protections, and horizons the Ottoman order had never provided.

Algiers carries two names, and two urban logics.
Atop ancient Phoenician and Ottoman layers, the French colonial city laid out in the 1800s projected order, permanence, and Europe.
Much of what we see along the boulevards of Algiers today was not built for the people who now inhabit it. And yet, between these grand facades, life insists itself: in the hidden alleyways of the Casbah, at a mahdjoub stand tucked within a former French café, within the everyday choreography of Algerian life, as the faces of revolutionary martyrs look out from the walls and balconies conceived for an entirely different political order.
Which other cities do you think carry two names, and two urban logics?
+ the real reason I’m here: shorts in December ☀️
Both a return to familiar streets and rhythms, and to a great city which fundamentally shaped my thinking and worldview.🇨🇳

I first dragged my family to China at just 16 years old - curious, wide-eyed, and utterly fascinated. Over the years, I’ve studied, lived, and worked here, tracing its languages, landscapes, and ever-complex layers.
Welcome to the Chinese Autonomous Region of Inner Mongolia: not to be confused with Mongolia the country, yet home to more ethnic Mongolians than the country itself! 🛖
