He was a celebrated war hero who dedicated so much of his life to this country. After retiring from two careers, he still wasn’t done. He went back to school in his seventies to study photography and turned it into a passion he shared with anyone who crossed his path, including through weekly volunteer work with the US Coast Guard. His accomplishments are endless, and I can’t begin to capture the full scope of who he was.
But to us, he was Papa Peanuts. The man who shared his love of peanuts and black licorice, who gave long garden tours while explaining each stage of growth, who turned the gazebo into his photo studio, who loved our weekly taco nights and the stories we shared around the table, and who took absolute delight in watching us attempt to eat his hot peppers. The hotter the better for him, and he thought it was hilarious every single time.
We had a special connection. I always felt proud when he told me, “I know I don’t have to worry about you. You’re tough and you can handle anything.” Coming from him, it was the greatest compliment I could receive.
I can’t remember a moment in my life when I wasn’t in awe of who he was. And while there is sadness in losing the pillar of our family, there is even more gratitude for everything he gave, everything he taught me, and the incredible life he lived for 97 years.
My biggest takeaways from my Papa are these: never stop moving your body, never stop learning, keep your hands dirty in the garden, and NEVER compromise your integrity or your commitments. He was the most committed man I know, to his family, to his career, his passions, his friends, anything Papa committed to you got every bit of his heart.
I already feel you with me, and know I’ll see you in the garden this spring. ❤️ Love You
It’s been 5 years of learning, growing, finding myself again, balancing my nervous system, and coming to a place where it blows my mind what has been created. I could not be happier living here in Austin. I am beyond thankful for all the new friends who have helped to make this place feel like home, the friends who know my soul and have constantly checked in to make sure I’m ok, my insanely incredible & wonderful agent who said “I’ve got you” and meant it! All of my clients that I’ve had for years, who said it’s ok girl I’ll see you in Austin or wherever you are, and the new clients who have given me a chance here, my sweet dad who constantly comes to see me just to make sure I’m ok.
I’m overwhelmed many times with gratitude of what can be, when you let go of what was! Thank you for that lesson, thank you for this life, thank you to myself for being resilient, adaptable, and learning the most important part of it all…… loving myself, having faith, and living everyone moment with as much gratitude as possible.
