I love choosing beautiful papers to work on as its an important element of any drawing.
No matter what brand, I always choose hot-pressed smooth paper so that my pen glides effortlessly across the page and the nib doesn't get caught in any fibers. For larger pieces like the cafe in the photo, the paper needs to be heavyweight so it can withstand the application of layers of ink and the gold leaf.
I don't want it to warp as this makes everything difficult later on when scanning and framing the piece. I used Arches Aquarelle HP 640gsm/300Ib, which is so thick it's like board and a lovely paper to work on.
The cafe is now at the framers getting ready for it's next gallery destination

The City of Bath is incredibly special to me, as my family history there spans nearly 100 years.
My grandparents lived in this beautiful city as a young married couple in the 1930s and my mum grew up in the beautiful Georgian building, Norfolk Crescent. I have such fond memories of visiting my grandparents and of playing in front of the cathedral as a child with my older brother. ๐จโ๏ธ๐๏ธโจ
Needless to say, being part of this exhibition means the world to me! If you can make it to the, itโs well worth the visit to see hundreds of beautiful pieces of art on display.
The exhibition is open daily until November 7th, 2026.
My ink drawing, included in the exhibition, took over a year to complete, balancing it alongside other projects. I worked from my own collection of photos, capturing the unique, detailed terrace of buildings before adding 24ct gold leaf accents.

Hundreds of different skilled artisans contributed to the vision, building, gardens and interior decorating of this amazing campus. It was wonderful to see the beautiful details inside and outside with my own eyes.

The original drawing is 1.35 metres wide. It took me 3 months to complete, starting from the initial sketch to the finished drawing. It is hand embellished with gold leaf ๐
