Last year I had the transformative opportunity to spend 3 days in the jungle of Veracruz with Cecilia, an artist and human I admire so deeply. CC is someone that I have a strange cosmic energy with, if I think about her or we’re talking about a project… I run into her, always. Our lives have overlapped in the past few years in so many wild ways - crossing borders and generations. The jungle river of Actopan, felt like a perfect culmination. I spent time with her family, I watched her study and expand, I learned, I drifted in healing waters with CC and. A backpack full of film cameras - we photographed, we filmed, we shared, we drank mezcal, we escaped scorpions and injuries. It’s these experiences that truly transform and mold us as humans.
It began 5 years ago approaching CC at with my baby on my hip, telling her how much I loved her music and wanted to photograph her - to now, several creative collaborations together, this album, and a sweet friendship. Grateful.
María is a female, Latinx photographer living in Oakland, California. Born in México and raised in Santa Fe, New México, her work is heavily influenced by both the Mexican and Southwestern cultures. Her imagery is a container for the complexity of identity - specifically where cultural history meets the modern.
María’s background in social work and personal identity shows up in her art as a commitment to strong social values. She leads with a goal of uplifting other creatives of color in the photography sphere both in front of the camera and in crew hiring. In this practice she hopes to be a part of a reimagined creative narrative of diverse stories and storytellers.
