Architects, Aljoša Dekleva and Tina Gregorič, an internationally recognized architectural duo working across Europe and the United States. Their practice is built on research by design and design by research, where context, material, society, and space become active tools for creating architecture that goes beyond the obvious. From award-winning houses and public buildings to experimental research projects, their work explores participation, collectivity, and the user’s experience as the core of architectural practice.
They kindly invited us to visit one of their projects in Kranjska Gora, and welcomed us with prosseco.
Vrhovlje, Slovenia, 2011-2014
The house appears as a single monomaterial object in the landscape, yet inside it contains two inserted wooden volumes connected by an intermediate landing, creating a layered spatial experience for contemporary family life.
The house-in-a-house concept allows each bedroom to perform as a primarily wooden pitched-roof house. The bridge connecting the two houses serves as a playroom. Three large square windows look out towards a hilltop church in Italy to the west, forest to the south and an entrance platform to the east. The interior horizontal structure is made of spruce CLT, supported by two steel I-beams on each long side. All partition walls are drywalls with timber substructures and three-layered spruce plywood panels, finished with natural oil.
The staircase functions as a ‘spatial installation’ and a multi-purpose element. It is made from plywood, and the material’s structural qualities suggest a ‘boxy’ shape. These boxes enhance the staircase’s structural stability. The client required a small workspace, which we incorporated into the living room – therefore, we decided to embed a library at the back of the boxy stairs, supported by black steel rods under tension.

The Karst plateau was once covered with dense oak forests. For centuries, the Venetians harvested these oaks to build the foundations of the floating city of Venice. When the trees disappeared, the wind slowly peeled away the thin layer of soil, exposing the raw limestone ground that defines the Karst landscape today.
Out of this exposed stone terrain emerged a distinctive architecture: small, compact, almost windowless houses built from the very limestone beneath them. Protection from wind, economy of material, and deep knowledge of craft shaped a powerful vernacular that still defines the villages of the Karst.
The Compact Karst House examines the concept of a proto-house: a compact, monolithic volume with a pitched roof. The roof continues the logic of the façade. Platty limestone, the traditional roofing material, is a scarce and protected geological resource today. Mimicking all the dimensions of traditional stone roofs, we used a cast-on-site concrete method to reinterpret the tradition. The façade and roof become one continuous surface, a contemporary echo of the stone silhouettes that define Karst villages.

The stone that was once underground is now the face of the house. Literally.
Excavated during the digging for the foundations, local limestone from the site itself was reused to build the façade — turning construction into a circular, on-site process where nothing leaves and nothing unnecessary arrives. What is removed from the ground returns to the building.
This technique reinterprets the logic of traditional Karst houses, where architecture grows directly from the material of the landscape. The Karst region is known for its mono-material stone architecture, a powerful reference being the traditional “Karst House” in Štanjel, almost a manifesto of building entirely from local limestone. These buildings demonstrate deep knowledge of material, craft, and construction, something often lost in contemporary building processes.
With Compact Karst House, we revisited that knowledge and translated it into a contemporary construction method.
The structural shell is built from brick and reinforced concrete, while the façade is made on site as a 15 cm thick layer of concrete with stones placed directly into the formwork. Each row of stones is laid by hand, concrete is poured behind, and once the formwork is removed, the surface is opened to reveal the natural texture of the limestone.
A low-tech method.
A local material.
A contemporary interpretation of tradition.
This approach also continues a personal lineage — the same technique was used in the Karst region in the late 1970s by Aljoša’s father, architect Marko Dekleva.

STAIRWAY ROOF HOUSE — PART 2 - details
Trieste, Italy, 2016–2026
From horizon to balustrade, the inhabitable roofscape transforms a monolithic volume into an articulated stair promenade. The stainless-steel balustrade is designed as a continuous spatial trace rather than an attached element. Crafted from brushed, marine-grade steel, it follows the roof’s slope with calibrated offsets from the concrete edge. Recessed anchor plates minimize visual weight, while a tensioned steel mesh infill ensures safety without obstructing views of the Adriatic horizon. The bush-hammered concrete—made with local Karst limestone aggregates—anchors the architecture in its geological context, with its granular surface playing with light and shadow over time.

STAIRWAY ROOF HOUSE - Part 1
Trieste, Italy, 2016-2026
unfolds through its landscape with a roof conceived as a fifth façade — a double-pitched staired terrace overlooking the Gulf of Trieste in the Adriatic Sea. The sloping plane lands gently onto the terrain, transforming the roof into a walkable topography and enabling a unique secondary entrance directly from the terrace. Conceived as an inhabitable surface, the roof becomes a place for walking, reading, and absorbing the horizon. Custom stainless-steel railings gently trace its edges. The bush-hammered concrete structure reveals the granulate of local Karst limestone, grounding the architecture in its geological context and amplifying the dialogue between house, terrain, and sea.
