Islamophobia has been rising across Europe and America for decades now — and we can’t understand where we are today without recognising the role politicians, media narratives and their anti-immigrant rhetoric have played in the dehumanisation of Muslims.

Muslims are more than headlines, stereotypes or political talking points. We are people with nuanced, complicated lives — just like everybody else.

That’s why I made a documentary exploring what it feels like to be Muslim in a country where the most powerful man in the world openly dehumanises you. The full documentary is now on YouTube. Link in bio.
I’ve stopped waiting for politicians to become who we hoped they’d be.

The hope is in us now. Change starts with ordinary people.

This moment is asking us to move beyond division, beyond borders, beyond the lines designed to keep us apart — and recognize that we are all in the same fight.

As I mentioned in this clip, Tawakkol Karman said: “Their movements became cross-border. Ours must too.”

More solidarity. More dialogue. More courage to see each other as allies instead of enemies.
I’ve done some interesting things as a filmmaker, and this was one of them.

No security. Just me and a colleague being picked up by militia members and taken to a compound in Georgia.

I’m posting this clip because I want people to understand the reality and danger of anti-Muslim rhetoric. This isn’t just online hate or political talking points. There are people actively training for armed conflict.

The full film is linked in my bio.
It felt important to share more from this documentary given the recent “Unite the Kingdom” rally in London and the San Diego mosque shooting.

This attack on Muslims isn’t new. When I was in America, I decided to go on the road and explore what rising Islamophobia, anti-Muslim rhetoric and hate crimes does to people on the receiving end of it.

If you’d like to watch the full documentary, the link is in my bio.
Fear of Muslims has become so normalized online that conspiracy theories, misinformation and anti-Muslim rhetoric are now shaping how ordinary people see their neighbours, their communities and the future.

This is a clip from my documentary, Muslim in Trump’s America. It is available to watch on YouTube.
Women’s rights are increasingly being weaponised by people who have never truly cared about women.

I had the chance to speak with the lovely on her podcast ‘The Pain Gap’ about my work as a filmmaker and how racism, misogyny, extremism and authoritarian politics are shaping our society. The conversation is available to listen to now.
What if giving up on MAGA voters is part of the problem?

I spoke with filmmaker about why lifelong friendships and families are breaking apart over Trump, and why she believes many people drawn into extremist or high-control belief systems are still reachable. In this provocative clip, Deeyah explains what she learned from sitting with extremists, militias, and MAGA supporters across the U.S.

This does not mean excusing harm. It means understanding influence, fear, disillusionment, and the human need for belonging.

The problem’s we’re facing affect us all. Racism. Genocide. Violence against women. Extremism. Fascism. Homophobia. The list is endless. If we stay silent, it only gets worse. Every one of us — even in our professional spaces — has a role to play. We cannot sit this one out. ✊🏽

In the course of making Meeting the Enemy, I met Schoep — who once led one of the largest white supremacist groups in America.

Jeff eventually left the extremist movement, partly because of the time we spent together - he now works to promote cohesion and understanding. Today, I’m proud to call him a brother.

At the Nobel Peace Center, Jeff and I shared the story of what happened — a truly unexpected friendship.

We were willing to sit across from each other, despite our profound differences. What transpired proved that dialogue, empathy and listening can disarm hate.

You can see his journey and our experience in Meeting the Enemy. Link in bio.
A dear friend sent me this clip of speaking about my film ‘Meeting the Enemy’ during his conversation with and I wanted to say how deeply grateful I am — for the awareness, the kindness and the support. Thank you Simon.

Real change begins with listening even when it’s uncomfortable, even when it feels impossible. This is something I’ve learnt in all my years of making films.
