There is an ornamental grass cultivar being distributed under the name Calamagrostis ‘Cheju Do’. It was discovered and selected by the plant exploration team of the Gothenburg Botanical Garden during an expedition to Jeju Island in 1992, and has relatively recently entered the horticultural trade. Deco Gardening imported the plant last year and began distributing it commercially in Korea this year, so I had been looking forward to seeing how this new grass would perform.
However, when I visited Deco Gardening yesterday and saw the plant in person, I realized that it was not Calamagrostis at all. It was Arundinella hirta, a species known in Korean as teolsae(털새).
My guess is that the plant may have been misidentified because Arundinella hirta is not a particularly familiar grass to European plant specialists, whereas Calamagrostis is much more familiar to them.
The name should therefore be corrected from Calamagrostis ‘Cheju Do’ to Arundinella hirta ‘Jeju-do’.
There is another issue with the cultivar name itself. ‘Cheju Do’ is not the correct romanization of Jeju Island(제주도) where the plant was collected. The standard form is ‘Jeju-do’.
So I would propose that this plant be referred to as:
Arundinella hirta ‘Jeju-do’
rather than Calamagrostis ‘Cheju Do’.

실새풀 '제주도'라고 유통하는 관상용 그라스 품종이 있습니다. 스웨덴 예테보리식물원의 식물탐사팀이 1992년 제주도에 탐사를 와서 발견하고 선발되어 비교적 근래에 유통되고 있는 품종입니다. 데코가드닝에서 작년에 들여와 올해부터 시중에 유통을 시작하고 있다고 하여 기대가 되는 품종이었습니다. 그런데 어제 데코가드닝에 가서 실제 식물을 보니 실새풀이 아니더라고요. 이 그라스는 털새였습니다. 아무래도 유럽 식물 전문가들에게 털새가 익숙한 그라스가 아니다보니 오동정된 것이 아닌가 추측해봅니다.
실새풀이 아니라 털새로 이름을 수정해야겠습니다. 게다가 품종명에 'Cheju Do'는 제주도의 바른 표기법이 아닙니다. 'Jeju-do'가 맞습니다.
그래서 이 식물의 이름을 털새 '제주도' Arundinella hirta 'Jeju-do' 로 바꾸어 부를 것을 제안합니다.

그곳에서부터 비롯되는 것 같다.
계절의 흐름을 이해하고 느끼며, 공간에 맞는 식물을 선택하고, 빠르게 소비하기보다 오래 바라보고 돌보며 함께 자라나는 시간을 즐기는 것.
그 과정 자체가 이미 하나의 정원 문화가 아닐까 싶다.
단순하게 참여했던 산업전에서, 이번 경험은 우리가 앞으로 어떤 널서리 문화를 만들어가야 할지 조용히 오래 생각하게 만드는 시간이었다.

첼시 찹 Chelsea Chop
첼시 플라워 쇼가 열리는 시기인 5월 말에 시행하는 가드닝 관리 기법으로, 식물의 정아를 제거하거나 줄기 일부를 절단하여 생장의 균형을 잡고 개화 시기를 지연시키는 효과가 있다. 흔히 알고 있는 적심이나 가지치기와 유사한 작업이다.
온실에서 재배하는 숙근초는 외부 환경보다 약 2~3주 정도 생육이 빠르게 진행되며, 상대적으로 높은 온도와 부족한 광량으로 인해 줄기가 연약하게 길어지는 도장 현상이 발생하기 쉽다. 따라서 첼시 찹을 통해 초장을 억제하고 분지를 유도함으로써 보다 균형 잡히고 탄탄한 초형을 형성하도록 관리한다.
