It creates a storm that may feel impossible to escape.
Before taking control of my money, I was depressed, nearly lost my job because the anxiety and depression of being in so much debt affected my desire to do the simplest things including those that lead to showing up for work.
Here are steps I took to take control of my money and debt:
1️⃣ Open up about your struggles. Talk to a trusted friend, family member, or a professional. You’re not alone in this battle, and sharing your story can lighten the load.
2️⃣ Educate yourself. Knowledge is power. Start with a simple Google search of terms you don’t know the meaning of.
3️⃣ Create a plan of action. Start small. Maybe your first goal is to open the pile of mail that you’ve been avoiding and organize it.
4️⃣ Seek professional help. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional and/or consult financial advisors or debt counselors. They can offer techniques to help you overcome debt-related depression or anxiety and/or strategies to manage your debt effectively, respectively.
5️⃣ Practice self-care. Your mental health is just as important as your financial health. Engage in activities that bring you joy. This is also why budgeting for fun even why you tackle your debt is essential.
Remember this is a journey, not a sprint and Beyoncé wasn’t built in a day.
So be patient with yourself. You don’t have to do all of this in one day…I definitely didn’t. But each day is a new opportunity to regain control and small steps add up to big results.

With the One Big Beautiful Bill now law, the system is moving toward fewer repayment options and more structure — which sounds simple until your situation doesn't fit neatly into the new rules. I broke down what's changing, what's at stake for Parent PLUS borrowers, and what to do right now.
Moments like this remind me why I do this work: because someone needs to translate the policy changes into plain language — and I'm here for it.

🛒 Use cashback apps like Rakuten, Ibotta, Receipt Hog, and Fetch every single trip

I’ve been talking about these changes for over a year, before the bill was even signed into law.
At some point, not knowing becomes a choice.

⚠️ Professional students: capped at $50,000/year, $200,000 lifetime
⚠️ All borrowers: new $257,500 lifetime cap on federal loans
⚠️ RAP becomes available
⚠️ PAYE and ICR repayment plans being phased out
⚠️ PSLF qualifying employer rules changing
⚠️ Forgiveness becomes harder to obtain
I’ve been in back to back client sessions for weeks and I’m tired. If you’ve been sitting on booking a student loan strategy session — my calendar is closing at the end of the month.

Here’s what’s changing:
🎓 Undergrad — no changes to annual limits, but all loans now count toward a new $257,500 lifetime cap
📚 Grad students — annual limit stays at $20,500, but the total amount you can borrow drops from $138,500 to $100,000
💼 Professional students — capped at $50,000/year with a $200,000 total borrowing limit
And Grad PLUS loans? Eliminated for new borrowers entirely.
But there's an automatic exception. And whether or not it applies to you depends on a few specific things.
Use this decision tree to find out where you stand.

A total of $133,375 including $1,752 in outstanding interest! 🎉
Pre-COVID my loans accrued over $25 a day in interest.
This program was established in October 2007 but since its inception, it was plagued with issues. Not to mention the Trump administration made it even harder for people who qualified to actually obtain forgiveness. At that time, the approval rating was less than 2%.
Last year, the Biden administration announced a limited waiver that would relax the rules of the program, automatically forgive borrowers who qualified and give retroactive credit for periods of repayment and forbearance helping borrowers get closer forgiveness.
I am able to celebrate my student loan forgiveness today BECAUSE of the PSLF limited waiver.
My payment counts never updated so I never saw that I actually reached the 120 payments required. However, I had 3 years of forbearance that once the waiver was applied, got me over that 120.
Yes, the waiver has expired but there will be another opportunity in July through the IDR waiver as well as permanent changes coming to PSLF. You can find out more about these efforts in my previous posts.
I’m debt free ya’ll! 😭
