I love California for that. Always changing, always reshaping itself, and somehow still deeply familiar. The coastline shifts, the light moves differently every month, the ocean never looks quite the same twice, and yet there is always this reassuring certainty that beauty will meet you there.

There are, however, a few constants.
Most of us birth workers become night riders. Crossing the quiet streets of Los Angeles while the city sleeps; did you know that KUSC radio stationis the bomb at 2am?
The traffic is mild, the air feels slower, and the world briefly stops asking so much of everyone.
We enter birth spaces on tiptoes because someone is usually asleep. Tiny siblings curled up in their beds, unaware that by morning their whole world may have changed. If this baby is lucky, they are arriving into a home already filled with history, toys on the floor, little shoes by the door, and people waiting to love them.
And when labor stretches into daylight and then another evening, we know this mother may simply need more time.
Birth hormones rise strongest in the darkness. There is wisdom in that. Night brings safety from the noise of the day, from schedules and expectations and busy minds.
Sometimes sleepy children wake just long enough to witness their mother in the deepest work of becoming. They see her move through fear, struggle, tears, surrender, strength.
Then eventually, when everyone drifts back to sleep, the baby arrives.

Sometimes something is labeled unsafe, when the problem is limited training, limited exposure, or a system that works best within a narrow range of situations. Birth holds many variations, and not every provider has been trained to support all of them.
When a family hears that a certain option is not available or not recommended, we need to know that often training shapes perspective, and perspective shapes the care that is offered.
Breech birth is one example. Many providers are no longer trained to attend breech vaginal births (especially in California), and that lack of hands-on experience changes what they feel comfortable supporting. The same can be true for physiological birth without medication, for upright pushing positions, for longer labors that unfold without intervention, and for births that take place outside of the hospital setting with skilled midwives.
Home birth is often discussed in broad terms, yet outcomes are closely tied to careful screening, preparation, and the experience of the care team. Water birth, VBAC, and twin vaginal birth are also part of this wider landscape, each one requiring specific knowledge and practice to be supported well.
This does not mean every option is right for every family. It means that birth is not one size fits all, and safety is often connected to context, preparation, and the people in the room.

Midwives who attend home births are not there for thee thrill of emergencies. They are there because they trust birth, and because they are trained to recognize when something is outside of normal and respond with care when needed.
And sometimes I think how precious it is for a baby to be born into the world, the home, that his family has carefully curated and carved for months, in the sweet anticipation of their arrival.
