It’s leg day! 🩷

Video Description: The front entrance of Hanger orthotic and prosthetic clinic. Text reads: “Picking up my new leg braces!” Then, a clinic room with parallel walking bars. My wheelchair is parked at the front of the bars. Wearing my pink braces, I stand up and walk holding the bars. Text reads: “Walk test! I chose light pink (smiling face emoticon).” As I reach the end of the bars I turn around slowly and laugh, then continue back. Text reads: “Turning is awkward. It will just take a while to adjust to them. I’ve been doing 4 hours of PT and OT a week for the past 9 months. I feel like my walk is looking great, I’m hopeful! (Smiling face emoticon)” Then, a video of me in my wheelchair exiting the clinic holding some papers. I spin around in my chair and smile, kick my leg to show the new pink braces. text reads: “I love them! I’m going to put stickers on them.” End video.

I’m happy to share that I have officially been accepted as a Canine Companions client! 💙

Getting here has been a process, but it will be so worth it! I feel thankful to Canine Companions and all of their team of trainers and volunteers for this opportunity.

Service dogs from Canine Companions are task-trained to assist a person with disabilities. If all goes well, I will be matched with a dog who can assist with mobility tasks and sound alerts.

If you are interested in supporting their mission, there are many opportunities at including becoming a puppy raiser! They are always needing volunteers.

Video Transcript: Isabella is signing in ASL. “Exciting things happening soon! Today I’m in Irving, Texas at the canine companions campus to interview for my new service dog. This school trains dogs for people with disabilities, such as physical disabilities and deaf/hard of hearing. Soon I will get a service dog from them. You all know my service dog Ali, she just turned 8 years old. She is aging and experienced some health issues. It feels sad, but I am also hopeful for the next part of my journey. Getting a service dog is a long process. About two years ago I mailed my application, then had some phone interviews, now I’m here for my in person interview. Next is to wait for a call back to team training where I will meet my new dog, that will take about 18-24 months. I enjoyed getting to know Canine Companions’ beautiful campus for service dogs!”

My girl is turning 8 years old today! 💗🎉

I’m thankful for the years she’s been by my side. She is by far my best, most loving, and stinkiest friend.

This birthday is bittersweet, as Ali was recently diagnosed with cancer. Thankfully her prognosis is good, but we have a tough treatment journey ahead of us. I knew the slowly increasing quantity of grey hairs would come a few extra challenges, and some slower and quieter days. After 8 years, I’m learning to slow down too, and take things at her pace.

Ali still loves her work and her many, MANY friends. I truly don’t think I would’ve built such a beautiful community if it weren’t for Ali, who is much more outgoing than I am.

Thank you Ali for your unconditional support, and thank you to everyone who loves her so much. Here’s to many more years filled with treats, squirrels, and rotisserie chickens. 💗

We are looking at each other. 3: Ali in my audiology grad school cohort photo. My classmates and I wear scrubs. Ali makes a silly face with her bottom teeth out. 4: Ali lays in my lap in my college dorm. She looks too big to be a lap dog. 5: I walk with Ali at sunset. I have on a pink dress, she wears a blue bandana. 6 and 7: Puppy pictures of Ali, she has big eyes and is much smaller than today.
was kind enough to send me their iQDry hearing aid dehumidifier to try out!

I’ve been using my older Dry&Store Global II for years before getting this one. It’s kept my hearing aids, and now my Osia sound processors dry and safe! Even saved me on a few occasions of accidentally showering or getting caught in the rain with my hearing aids.

As an AuD student clinician, we are ALWAYS counseling our patients on moisture control, since it can make a big difference in sound quality and longevity of our devices.

So I was excited to see that Dry&Store has a new version, the iQDry, that’s smaller, rechargeable, and travel friendly! It also has a display screen that shows you exactly how much moisture is being removed from your hearing aids.

I love seeing new technology making it easier to care for your hearing devices! If you’re interested, find it at the link in my bio!

Video Description: A product box on a table. A card on it says, “Welcome to the science of dry.” Hands open the box to show a small white hearing aid dehumidifier box. The box is plugged in, and a hearing implant sound processor is placed inside. A screen shows the 48%, indicating the humidity level inside the box.
Just wanted to share one cool thing about an implanted hearing device with a magnetic processor. I can use it in water!!!

The Aqua Kit that came with my processors has a case that covers the entire external part making it waterproof.

I really got to try it out going swimming a few times and it works great! I don’t remember what it was like to hear when going swimming, so that was cool! I think I’ll even try it out on rainy days to protect my processor.

I finally got the chance to try out Convo Now! This is an on-demand video interpreter service that you can use anywhere and anytime with network connection. Users who sign up with Convo Now get 20 complimentary minutes per month!

Going out as a Deaf or hard of hearing person can be challenging due to communication and language barriers.

Having access to an interpreter anywhere eases some of that worry, and gives me more confidence and independence.

Transcript
Isabella, a tan Mexican woman signs in ASL,
“As a Deaf/hard of hearing college student, I love exploring my local community and finding fun things to do. However, sometimes things aren’t accessible. I may struggle to understand conversations or have communication breakdowns. That’s why Convo Now offers on demand interpreter services you can call from your mobile device! I’ll show you how it works!”
Isabella enters a museum in her wheelchair.
She observes illustrations and fossils of dinosaurs. She opens her phone to Convo Now and starts a videocall. She asks the interpreter, “Can you see me ok?”
Addressing a museum attendant, Isabella signs and the interpreter voices for her.
“I was just curious about the skeletons here. Are they actual bones or just models?”
Museum attendant: “Most of them are fossils, they’re real bones”
Isabella: “I’m curious about the big dinosaurs on the 2nd floor.”
Museum attendant: “So the T-Rex is a cast of a partial. The skull is built for the jaw bone we found. The rest of it is a Daspletosaurus, a similar theropod.”
Isabella watches the interpreter on video call signing.
Then in a room full of fossils, Isabella signs, “I just learned these fossils in this display are all real skeletons from animals that lived long ago here in Texas. So cool!”
Back at home, she signs, “Wow, that was easy and communication felt smooth! Having the security of an interpreter my pocket encourages me to be more independent. I’ll definitely keep using Convo Now more often!”

I felt inspired to make a little slideshow of easy ways to be a good ally to Disabled+ folks! 💙

Even as a DeafDisabled person, I find myself making mistakes like this occasionally. I hope that this list reminds you of how you can treat us with respect and dignity even in small ways!

It’s also important to remember that while these sentiments are shared by most of the Disabled+ community, some of these may not apply to everyone. It’s always best to ask rather than assume how someone feels about something. All of us are different!

I hope you learned something from this! 🤟🏽 Please share to spread the awareness!!
