This is one of my fondest memories with my partner, D. She amazes me everyday but this day she was hiking at elevation with a broken arm. Currently she's pregnant with our second kiddo and continues to be an excellent mom for Quinn. I'm blown away by her everyday. Below is a summary of why I think it's important I keep taking photos amidst an AI age and showcase the beauty of the natural world:

Content curation and understanding social media's immense power with it is one of the most meaningful lessons I try to teach my classes.

It's also why constant professional development (and even just development as a person) is so important in my profession. You have to understand the tools before you can teach to them, and explore them further with students. We are woefully behind in the public school system and we protect those teachers who refuse to learn rather than empowering or challenging them.

One of the most empowering elements of digital media is the opportunity to learn anything, anytime, anywhere. There are thousands of worthwhile (and just as many garbage) sources, apps, and learning programs out there; how to seek out, select, and then summarize information and sources is often ignored in schools. Too many teachers (and parents) assume their students are "digital natives," yet outside of Snapchat, TikTok and the odd cellphone app, they're often anything but.

Alpine wildflowers on a common Vancouver Island summit. Grateful to be able to push my body amidst a changing world and changing life.

It's been over two years since my last post. My wife and I were fortunate to welcome a daughter! Social media and meta (IGs owner) in general have seemed rather unimportant or antithetical to how I want to live my life. Including how I want to share her/my/our life and navigate the digital world. The fact that my account is public compounds this. The world is experiencing some terrible trends and genocides, from Sudan to Palestine, to the rise of fascism it can seem hopeless.

I teach human geography and I teach my students not only what is wrong and issues within our global society but also what is working! We have the technology and capabilities to solve a wide array of problems right now! The key will be to understand the three fundamental laws of power, and to engage in change. I would not have had a daughter if I had lost hope. We can absolutely change a lot of our fundamental systems for the better. It will require a lot of will and sacrifice, but those are what we have in abundance. Look for action rather than posts. Find capital, divestment and donation opportunities that are effective. The world can support the eventual ~10 billion that will be here, the real question of our time is whether or not we care about those kids and where they were born.

Here's to the future of humanity, one I hope my daughter will be proud of. We have a long ways to go, but I do believe we can get there - I teach so many amazing students that continue to give me hope. Thanks to all my current and former students, you're all fantastic humans.
It's been a long time coming, excited to head out with a tent and dog in tow this weekend.

I can't thank my amazing wife enough. She's supported me mentally and made everyday better! Being able to wander with you is my greatest joy in life. You're my favourite human.

Building your body back up from injury changes as you age. My last two major accidents/injuries in particular have been a grind. Without the support of my friends and family it would have been a much longer and less enjoyable grind!

I'm super grateful to our wonderful medical community who have supported me through surgery and recovery. I am very lucky to live where I do and have access to their amazing work. Thank you to all of my healthcare providers!
Gratitude, one assignment choice my psychology 11 class can choose currently.

Many people experience existential dread when they learn about the scale of the universe, and some hard truths about our past and future as a species. I certainly have in the past! I try and remind myself to enjoy the brief spin within the universe we are fortunate to be conscious of. To be grateful and remind myself not only of the positive moments with those you love; but also the smaller, day-to-day, moments within a universe of negatives, positives and everything in between. I'm also very fortunate to have a great support system in my partner, family and friends when my mental health shifts too much towards dread!

The fact that you have the same elements in you that make up our known universe is a wild concept. It's one my science 10 class is just being introduced to. For me, it helps to put humanity in perspective from a global scale - and our shared future with our planet.

We are going to face some massive challenges as a species in the upcoming days and years. Most of my existential dread stems from this reality. The climate crisis is going to test us in ways humanity has not been before. Here's hoping we can accelerate positive change and continue to be grateful for a place to live amongst a lot of inhospitable areas in the universe!

Feeling very grateful to have been able to spend so much time with my best friend this summer!

A long overdue celebration of the fact that we really enjoy going through the experience of life together!

I loved creating more memories of an unforgettable trip with you, but I also love every day with you. Thanks for being such an amazing human.
There's some really heavy news out there. That doesn't mean there aren't brighter days ahead. I'm currently teaching Human Geography 12. From population demographics to energy production, the climate crisis and war, there's some stark realities facing humanity.

You're living through a global pandemic, it's been over a century since the last one and humanity has since achieved widespread globalisation in many respects.

Depending on where you are in the world, how you identify, your family and friends, and your level of empathy you will have lived a very different experience for the past two years. It has been tough mentally, there's no question.

Some of you who are extremely privileged will feel as though you're through the pandemic. If we learn from the lessons and inequality that are being shown and were laid bare in so many different civic, national and international cases we can have brighter days ahead.

There was some truly amazing news throughout these times as well. I believe we can use some of these really tough lessons to highlight where we got it right as a species. I try and share with them "what I'm doing Wednesday's" where I give them some examples of how I deal with varying degrees of existential dread. Yesterday it was about staying involved, sharing/donating your privilege where/when you can and advocating for those who need it.
It's easier to feel empathy towards an animal than nature itself.

Yet if there's one thing that time in the mountains, or along the ocean, brings home to me is the place of humanity in the geological time scale, we're infinitesimal. Infinitesimals are numbers that are closer to 0 than any real number, but are not 0. That's an important distinction. I don't think humanity is insignificant, as in 0, however when you zoom out - we're definitely not significant.

I think that's an issue many people struggle with, insignificance can be paralyzing. Especially when our continued existence will be in how we treat existential threats, is it something to conquer time and time again? Or will those threats be something we adapt and adjust to ensure we don't have to deal with them again? These are big, big problems that seem to be insurmountable by individual actors. Yet we've adjusted to many other similar crises in our very short (geologically) 250, 000 years of existence with much less technology, creativity and communication.

The most pressing problem is the pandemic you're currently in (just in case you forgot, we're not through it yet). Stoked to see vaccination rates climb around the world so we can get out of this.

Mathematically (based on our current ways of life) it's unlikely that this will be the last pandemic in your lifetime. Understanding virology, epidemiology and transmission rates require an understanding of math. I think it's one of the reasons you see people struggling in certain areas/countries of the world where they don't have the requisite math skills from school.

I don't think our insignificance means we should lean towards inaction but it does remind me that the world will continue to spin without humanity. We should do our best to figure out how to help each other to extend the temporal range (the lifespan of a species) of humanity, there's a lot of work to be done. Education is a first step, but dealing with systemic racism, inequity and finding a willingness to share our resources, power and privilege will be where we see if humans, as a species, will be able to extend our temporal range.

Grateful for you everyday and forever.

Excited to continue the wild ride of life with you and Rory. Here's to many more adventures, and time with those, and that, which we love!

Danielle and I eloped in our backyard a couple of weeks ago, thanks to.summitphotography for capturing it all beautifully! A huge thanks to all our friends and family for their support this day and all the other days!
Let's talk about mental health amidst massive climate anxiety, a pandemic, and the reckoning with the imperialist/colonial history of the world and how it has created systems with deep flaws being further exposed by our current global economic and health realities.

These are examples of what gives me anxiety. I don't have many things in life that truly, deeply worry me. To combat this I do two things when I feel like I am struggling a bit mentally and leaning the wrong way on the happiness/depression spectrum. One; I go outside, camp, hike, bike or spend time with loved ones in fresh air anywhere (or sometimes just decompress at home by myself), two; I try and focus on being grateful, learning and understanding more about my privilege (and random life luck/chance that I was born at the time I was, in the country I was, with the parents I am deeply grateful for) and then how I can better use and share my privilege.

That can take many forms. As an example, my diet choices are heavily influenced by these anxieties. I don't espouse to have many answers, just willing to continue the conversations, learn and search for better answers. While continuing to push for change where we already have answers; ways in which we can look at public funding, taxation, and undoing some of the systemic issues plaguing the world such as racism, lobbyists, voting systems and mechanisms (or lack thereof for many).

My dad had a great point when we discussed some of this. He said, "There's still lots of really good, amazing and talented people in the world doing amazing things." He's right, people are trying to raise awareness and come up with solutions to the current trajectory of the world's climate, people are researching a vaccine and will hopefully be able to get more funding to prevent (or be more ready for) future pandemics.

Today I'm just grateful for my parents, my partner and my dog. Practice gratitude if you haven't as a mechanism to help train your brain to lean towards the happiness side of the spectrum!

What are you grateful for?

BC Parks are my happy place.

They're also extremely underfunded. They have been for over three decades and are seeing some of their highest use ever.

Let's continue to work to increase representation of all people, body types, and fitness levels in the outdoors and enjoying fresh air.

This requires funding for education, trail maintenance, site building and maintenance, accessibility improvements, as well as more park operators to be out in these amazing places; helping others learn how to do so safely and Leave No Trace.

The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society are helping raise awareness as the BC budget committee has just released their recommendations for this year's budget, which includes increased parks funding! Make sure your local representative knows you value that!
