I vividly remember seeing Emerson’s face the minute she was born. So I thought about new chapters, fresh starts and clean slates. I thought about taking up space. And saying 🖕🏽you to imposter syndrome. I thought of my daughter seeing my face on the page. I reminded myself how much I belong here. And although my fingers weren’t frozen anymore, my hands were shaking.
My editor’s letter is about Black love — and not the relationship goals kind. It’s about the kind of courage it takes to love yourself and jump in with both feet even when you’re scared. It’s about the decision to put a single woman on the cover of the Black love issue. It’s about how much my love for our community and drove the decisions I made in this issue and the direction I’m taking the brand.

When I thought about the Black Love issue, I asked myself what’s more beautiful than a Black woman loving herself? Our gorgeous cover star commands attention all on her own — and as she says: “This moment is about me.”
The brilliant tells her story beautifully, reminding us all that sometimes Black love is about the journey to finding your forever love, but most times it’s about loving yourself enough to know when the moment is about you and no one else.
