I really wonder just how many folks fully grasp what’s going on with this model and the path I took to get there.
I’ve said it in a few places but I’m sure that most people I showed this to in the early WIP phase would have been thinking to themselves ‘there is no way this is going to work’. Just the idea that this started off as a 3d printed transparent part that was polished to be fully glossy that I slowly painted over and couldn’t see at all how it was going until much later in the project. I expect when I share the WIPs it will be eye opening for a lot of folks because this really is something new and I think rather exciting in the mini space this is still just a proof of concept and now I’ve figured out how to do it I can see much more potential. It’s really going to open up some seriously wild ideas finally there is some sort of way to make transparent ethereal looking stuff.

So this scene was always meant to be just a proof of concept test to see if using clear resin in a certain way and shapes could work as a way to present the transparent and ethereal looking smoke for minis. Boy oh boy did I take a mega risk on this one, it’s been a huge time investment honestly way more than I ever predicted because you simply cannot take it easy and basically have zero room to make mistakes because if you get a brush stroke in an area that you don’t want paint there is no going back. It’s been a slow process with quite a lot of layered brush strokes and glazing.
This I would say is a very pure form of true glazing because you’re using the paint transparency to help with the transition from paint to transparency. I painted this on just glossy clear resin, no primer just straight onto the glossy surface, let me tell you it has been a wild challenge.
But man. I got lucky and although it has also been an insane challenge and I’ve worked hard it has come together better than I could have ever imagined or hoped and the proof of concept has come together better than I dreamed or hoped. The potential for working like this is just ridiculous l can see so much room for using transparent resins in all sorts of novel and interesting ways and I cant wait to keep playing with it.

Hopefully this one gives you a bit of insight into what the working process for this project was for me. I’ve tried to include a bunch of WIP shots of the digital development of the base as well.
This set of 20 images doesn’t include the sculpting WIP work done by for which he has his own catalogue of progress on the model construction side.
This kind of project takes a serious amount of dedication and I’ve said it before on these posts but I don’t think I’ll ever be doing such a huge base for a 75mm project ever again. I didn’t really think that the base I was intending to make was in the ‘extra largish’ kind of size it’s just appropriate for the size of the model and he’s not even really truly 75mm scale because I think it’s more somewhere between 54mm and 75mm rather than being strictly 75mm because Minotaurs are big suckers and he’s only 100mm tall from hoof to head. I guess that’s pretty big but in lore Mino’s can be twice the size of a human.
Anyway, I hope this bunch of posts gives a good impression of some of the path this model has taken, there really was a huge amount of work involved in the later evolution of the base as well. But I don’t think anyone would say that the final result hasn’t turned out for the better?

So here are the close ups as expected (and requested). I’m usually the kind of person for which words come easy (as you all know I’m very verbose in my posts) but my head ain’t working properly today and they’re just not coming like usual. I don’t really have things I can say here which wouldn’t end up being too many words. Like describing the issues I have with the base composition will take much longer than I can fit here, there are other areas for improvement as well.
It’s really incredible to consider that I still feel like I have so much room for growth. Can’t wait to get back at it and really crack out some more stuff.
Working on a bust next I think and then it will be a bunch of Warhammer only for a fair while. This will definitely be the last larger sized 75mm model with a big crazy base I ever make. From now on 75mm stuff gets smaller tighter bases and the focus becomes the model. Bigger more interesting bases can go with Warhammer or 54mm scale because the sheer surface area on this model is just ridiculous.
But most of all, please enjoy and I’d love to hear from you if you have thoughts or comments on colour choices, texture painting technique, anything and everything you might consider or critique.

I’m really concerned about transporting this model and vibrations so not sure if I will bring it to any shows in aus or not he’s very too heavy and has quite small attachment points at the hoofs - I wish I had considered this beforehand and printed him hollow. If anyone has ideas about this I’d love to hear from you.

I would like to present the Minotaur sculpted by the truly incredible master. I am more honored than I can put into words to have had the chance to work so closely with Hugo on this project. It was a passion project for the both of us and his sculpt is utterly incredible & matches my vision perfectly. The weight, presence and character of the sculpt is just top tier. Painting on something sculpted meticulously for you individually as an artist is such an incredible experience.
So it might be clear that there is some resemblance to Erik Swinsons WoW inspired Minotaur and that was the direct inspiration for this model. I love Warhammer though and so my intent was to try and take that orange Minotaur look and put my own little spin on things to make it fit Warhammer. So the idea that came to me was to use the ‘pc master race’ meme as an inspirational fundamental for the character. I wanted a Minotaur standing in heroic pose with his white blonde hair blowing in the wind. From such silly humble ideas do such things grow.
Ultimately while I’m very happy with the result I can see areas to improve and it’s crazy to think that if I started again today I could do a better job. I won’t rag on this one too much because I know it’s pretty special but compositionally I wish I knew then what I know now. The weakest areas are in the base sculpting which was all me. Some of you in Au will have seen this model in its earlier form which I brought to ArcOpen last year, I knew it wasn’t finished at the time but I brought it anyway, that was a mistake I’ll never make again. Ultimately I am very happy with where it has ended up after another few months of extra work.

While this isn’t the most ‘wow factor’ filled paint job I think it has been quite successful in my attempt to make the ‘ideal’ box art. I don’t want to make people feel like they can for don’t want to paint a model because it’s been ‘beaten’ but rather I want people to see this version and see the potential for interpretation and want to have a go at their own take on the drapery and different materials in this model. There is also a lot of subtle nuance that you might not notice until taking a closer look. I’ve especially been working on the fine tuning of sheen for this model but maybe didn’t get it 100% right for photos from the purple angle but it works much better in person which is always my primary goal, great photos are secondary but this model will tour the world with Piotrek and his Neko stand at events so I hope many of you get to see it in person one day. If you do see it in person I’d love to hear from you in my pm.
Since it’s the first model I’ve been involved with designing that is available widely I really really can’t wait to see more versions of this painted. So far I haven’t seen a second one here, who will be first to finish after me? Let me know what you think of the design as well, was I able to capture enough of the untrustworthy cyberpunk desert arms dealer vibe. I do love my fantasy so it certainly has an influence in my choices the more classic looking falchion could have had a more cyberpunk edge to it but I partly wanted the cyberpunk and tech side edge to be a bit of an Easter Egg to the scene.

So I said I’d talk a little about this project in my next post about it and I could talk a lot about this one. This project was started years ago. I believe the sculpt was finished in September 2023 and the I received the incredible print in March 2024. That’s quite a long lead time. This model is directly linked to the Swordmaster bust I painted, it is the same character just different location and timing.
I enjoyed painting this one very much, while I felt the long hours and the painting were very difficult I felt very inspired and highly motivated from the very start to very finish of the project. I’m also very happy I decided to make a new base this new one is so so much better than the old one. I believe we will discuss this in a GitGud podcast, maybe next one?
I’ve tried really hard to make this High Elf feel ethereal and almost have a magical shine to it. I think part of the reason for the success is that this idea matches my very precise style well and works very well for this model and project.

For this model I decided it was the time to take the next step along the road to trying to understand the way NMM and reflections function with the environment. It is the newest most difficult thing I’ve ever painted and I have been going hard on this and other works for the last months and have never been so exhausted at the end of each painting session. This one made me dig deep. I do think it is quite an achievement because the incredible amount of risk I took going into this project could have turned out to make this look awful however I was fortunate enough to take the Best in Show award with this model over the weekend so I must have gotten something right.
