In the most sensitive way I can express, it fascinated me. Not like ‘omg look they are burning a b8dy’ but more how they held pride for and were unashamed to cremate a loved one so openly. To bare the vulnerability of their shared grief for anyone to see. How they created a space where the living and the de4d can exist at the same time, the strength to watch someone they loved turning to ash, to celebrate their loved one’s life and accept his passing into another world…
I realised I held a deep respect and appreciation for the way they chose to say goodbye and it made me question why, in England (and many western societies) death and funerals can be still kinda taboo and hush, why we choose to conceal the passing of another in many aspects.
Not to say that this is wrong, but rather, why do we do it like that? And, why do they do theirs like this?
And how death, being inevitable and universal, in which we all share, see, experience and become… is perceived and handled so differently amongst varying cultures
It kept me curious.
It was another moment in my travel journey that shook me into realising again how my ‘normal’ back home is not the only ‘normal’ to exist in the world… 🌎
In full true honesty… I hate Bali..
It’s overcrowded, over westernised and I’m sorry to say but shallow and superficial.
It’s a beautifullll island and while the tourism has done wonders for local business and livelihood, I’m also afraid it’s slowly doing more damage to the true culture, energy, its people, and not to mention the environment also!
Having needing to be here for a specific medical appointment… I found myself wondering how I can make the most of my time in a place I didn’t really want to visit (again)
That’s when I met Wayan and his family.
Not just another mass tourist ‘must do’ activity but a personal & meaningful cultural exchange between people who care about what they do/believe and those wanting to learn and understand. And that understanding being mutually heard 🔮

Without a doubt the best experience of my life swimming with manta rays!! They are literal angel birds of the ocean and incredibly calm and majestic beings.
