Since I was with some friends and family, I only had 1-1.5 hours for a sketch and had to decide on a relatively quick composition. Luckily, I found a view of this castle surrounded by trees - which meant I could have a bit of architecture and details while also filling the rest of the page with greenery.

Iāll have to admit: This sketch was on the verge of self-torture. Even though I found a spot with a direct front perspective, getting the measuring and symmetry correct were easier said than done.
However, I was determined to do at least one intricate sketch of the Parliament, so I knew what I was getting myself into beforehand. š

With all the whimsical and magical buildings on every corner, it was hard to settle on a spot to sketch. After walking around for a little bit, I found the perfect spot and started sketching.
Since the building was mostly one tone, I was able to have fun layering my watercolors and bringing out the textures and shadows.

Iām spending a few days in the Hungarian capital catching up with family and friends from the U.S. Of course, I still couldnāt resist the urge to bring my sketchbook and set out for the banks of the Danube for an evening sketch of the parliament on my first day here.
I was fighting against the time on this one, which was probably a good thing since it made my sketch looser and quicker. But in the end, Iād say it a good sketching start to my trip!

I met up with a painting friend earlier this week after work. We only had around 30 minutes until sunset, so a simple subject matter, a small format, and no second guessing was called for.
What I like about these small sketches is that the expectation is low. The goal isnāt to fill the page with an entire painting. Instead, itās about capturing what you can in the limited time you have.

Luckily, an artist friend and I found a late-blooming magnolia the other week in Kƶrnerpark in Neukƶlln. Itās not the most detailed sketch, but it was the perfect subject for a quick after work sketch!

I always love a spot where nature and architecture meet - and this place was certainly giving that: Magnolias, tulips, trees and of course a beautiful green copper dome in the background.
If youāre wondering: Yes, I did shamelessly cover the pillar to the left of the church with a tree, since it was covered in scaffolding and I just didnāt like the vibe (although you canāt see the scaffolding on the photo).

After arriving to the city and getting my bearings, I wrapped up my first full day with a sketch of the Votivkirche as seen from behind one of the many blossoming magnolia trees.
I had to force myself not to add too many details to the church in the background. After all, the magnolias were the whole reason why I was sketching there!

Itās always a bit of a scramble to get a few cherry blossom sketches in each season. The weather can be unpredictable, and a tree that blossomed last week might have already peaked a few days later.
However, I still love the magic that comes with spring and the excitement of getting out and capturing the blossoms while I can in my sketchbook.
