What do you think about this possible change?
Germany just proposed its biggest economic reform in years.

On July 2, Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government presented a package of around 34 measures to restart a stalled economy that grew just 0.2% last year. It touches taxes, pensions, work rules and bureaucracy all at once. Important: this is a plan, not law yet. Most of it still has to pass.

For your wallet, there’s good news. About €10 billion a year in tax relief aimed at lower and middle incomes, with an average family saving around €600 from 2027, and child benefit rising from €259 to €272 per child by 2028. To help fund it, income above €280,000 would be taxed at 47%.

The harder parts are at work. You’d need a doctor’s note from the first day of illness, not after a few days. Fixed-term contracts without cause could run up to 48 months, double today’s limit. And on pensions, the retirement age would be tied to life expectancy, part of the state pension would be invested in markets, and freelancers would finally have to pay in.

Businesses welcomed the flexibility and the lighter red tape, including automatic approval of some permits if officials go quiet for four months. Critics call it too little, too late.

Why it matters for internationals here: this shapes your taxes, your contract security, your pension and your retirement age. Whether you’re employed, self-employed or raising a family in Germany, some of this will reach you.

What do you think about the changes?

Comment “PENSION” and I’ll send you the registration link.

Pensions are becoming one of the biggest financial challenges in Germany and across Europe. The question is not if the system will change, but how it will affect you.

That’s why I’m starting a series of masterclasses with experts on topics that matter for internationals living in Germany. And pensions are the first one.

On Tuesday, July 7th, I’ll be joined by the team from Pensionfriend to explain how the German pension system works, what the current reforms mean, and what options you have to prepare for your future.

The goal is to give you the information you need to make better decisions.

See you there!
Bürgergeld is gone from July 1.

Germany is replacing its long-term unemployment benefit with Grundsicherungsgeld, or “basic security.” Around 5.3 million people were on Bürgergeld, and this is now law, in force from July 1, 2026.

The payment doesn’t change: a single adult still gets €563 a month plus rent, heating and insurance. What changes is the rules around it. Miss a Jobcenter appointment and your benefit can drop 30% instead of 10%, and three missed appointments can cost you it entirely. Savings are also less protected, with age-based limits from about €5,000 under 30 up to roughly €20,000 over 51, down from €40,000. Parents are now expected back to work at 14 months, not 3.

One change is positive: health gets more weight, so people can be referred to rehab or preventive care earlier.

If you’re already receiving it, do nothing. Existing claims transfer automatically and the amount stays the same. The new rules mostly bite later, when you miss something or your savings get checked.

Fair tightening, or just harder on people already struggling?

Europe right now feels like hell 🤣🔥
Germany just broke its own heat record. 🌡️

This is happening in Germany, week of June 28, 2026.

Germany hit 41.5°C on Saturday, a new all-time record, with one eastern town logging its warmest night in 150 years. The hard part was inside the hospitals: one in Siegburg triggered its disaster protocol, and only about a third of German hospitals even have AC in patient rooms. Fans and portable units then sold out everywhere, which says a lot about how rare AC still is here.

A few things for your wallet too. Pensions rise 4.24% from July 1, about €77.85 more a month for a 45-year earner, and this one is final. The Bundestag passed a right-to-repair law. Cheap parcels from outside the EU (Temu, Shein, AliExpress) get a new customs duty of around €3 from July 1. And Ryanair finally stopped charging parents to sit with their young kids, though the free seats are random and usually at the back.

Which of these affects your life here the most?

Comment “German” and I will send you the link to try Emergent for free 🙂

I’m applying for German citizenship, so I built my own platform to practice for the Einbürgerungstest.

And honestly… the result was amazing.

I just explained what I needed, and Emergent built the whole thing.
