I didn’t know Joe very well at the time but in the years since I am proud to call him my friend. As portraits go, I was happy with this one.
A few people asking why I’m not posting any new art. This is down to me making a whole new body of work to be featured in a solo show here in Belfast in September ‘26. I decided not to post anything from any of the paintings until much closer to the time. I accept that this will cost me ‘engagement’ between now and then, but to be honest, I quite like misusing instagram sometimes.
No new art, no hashtags, occasional political rants, limited engagement, what could possibly go wrong? 😑
I had to take a ferry from Belfast, then drive for 6 hours, take another ferry over to Stornoway, and drive another hour almost the length of the island. I left yesterday morning first thing and arrived for a 9pm sunset last night. I deliberately asked very few questions about where I was going because I didn’t want to spoil the anticipation, but I was also expecting pretty cold and bad weather because that’s the norm. Instead I was greeted with the biggest blue skies and relative warmth, and was just gawping in every direction.
This is one of the most unspoiled and solitary places I have been, and quite the opposite of this time last week in the jungle of Costa Rica. I cannot believe how weird life can be sometimes.
The house my collectors have built is quite stunning. The design and decor is something to behold. And a full on observatory to boot! To say I was bowled over would be an understatement. This morning I was walking on the whitest sand and listening to the still of nature reduced to its slowest. Epic.
Heading back now, but so enriched.
