Our balance beams are more than props. They function as play-based learning tools that support multiple areas of child development at the same time.
In our Story Dance Pathway™ obstacle courses, dancers engage in:
• Construction Play by building and rearranging pathways
• Symbolic Play as beams transform into garden trails, flower stems, bridges, or winding roads
• Dramatic Play as dancers step into imaginative roles and scenarios
The visual setup itself also serves a developmental purpose. Defined pathways and color-coded spaces help strengthen spatial awareness — a foundational skill within the Pyramid of Learning. Children learn to visually organize and navigate space while moving through the environment.
Balance beams also support ocular motor development through visual tracking as dancers follow narrow pathways, changing directions, and movement patterns. These eye tracking skills are connected to future reading and classroom readiness skills.
And of course, the vestibular and proprioceptive input provided through balancing, stepping, shifting weight, and controlled movement helps strengthen postural security, coordination, balance, and body awareness.

A year earlier (May 2020) I made the decision to close down my first business the premier mobile dance and performing arts program in Colorado. I ran the program for 15 years.

During that time, Dance to Learn®️ (the Curriculum I created for the mobile program) became its own entity. It’s also when Dance to Learn®️ as you know it today was born!
I captured a lot of content during these early months (& years) as Dance to Learn®️ grew to become what you know of it today. I was so excited for the next chapter of the business I had spent 15 years building.
Most of this content was captured and never shared. It is almost obsolete now because the Curriculum has progressed so quickly.
The structure and foundation is still the same. The components (props, music, activities) have changed. This shows, when your classes are based on the child and not the content…your classes should and will look different while also maintaining the key elements (for us the themes and the concepts) of the original content. You should be able to change everything else about your lesson without losing the primary “what” you are teaching. For us the Conceptualized-Thematic Components.
🔑 Theme: The Theme is the primary topic the lesson explores! At Dance to Learn®️ we like to keep our themes based on real world topics which usually coordinate with what our students are learning in school. In May for example, we will explore Growing a Flower Garden 🌱🌷💐
🔑 Concept: Once we have our Theme, we select a dance concept to explore! Some of our favorites for exploring Flowers are:
🌷 Motions: Flowers grow in a single spot in a Flower Bed (non-locomotion) while 🦋 butterflies zip through the garden (locomotion)
🌷 Sizes: Growing from tiny seeds to medium stems with leaves and big blooming petals.
🌷 Shapes: Twisted roots, straight stems, angular leaves, and curvy petals!

Here’s how our May Curriculum - the Life Cycle of a Butterfly 🐛🦋 has been repackaged.
Starting with simple props found from the dollar tree and taught to hundreds of dancers in the schools we partnered with. I even taught this curriculum to my first corporate partnership - the Butterfly Pavillion.
From crawling over butterfly mats to building giant caterpillars created with stepping domes and curve-a-beams…this is the story of the growth of Dance to Learn®️
While some in the industry want me to believe I couldn’t have created what I have today without them, the truth is I created what I have today before I even knew they existed.

Can I speak frankly? It’s so frustrating to me that AI resources have taken over so much of the dance space that dance teachers have to question if something was created by an actual experienced professional or Artificial Intelligence 😒
Here’s some highlights of Dance To Learn®️ and how our curriculum has been developed over the years:
🩷 Dance to Learn®️ began as the curriculum for my mobile dance program. The program grew so big so fast that I realized pretty quickly I needed a curriculum to guide a growing teaching staff. This was in 2009

💛 I created a Teaching Certifcation for my staff as part of their training. This was very specific to my mobile program and included important policies and safety guidelines aligned to the State of Colorado. I would love to create an option for Certification for our network of dance educators.
💚 The Dance to Learn®️ Curriculum that’s here today is different than the Curriculum from 2009 because we are constantly evaluating our practices to meet the needs of our students and share options that can be adjusted and evaluated for dance teachers to apply in their classrooms.
🩵 The Dance to Learn®️ Curriculum is also constantly updated with new resources to help dance teachers meet the needs of students today.

That’s why I wanted to share the Lesson Planning Flow we follow at Dance to Learn®️ (and AI is not a part of it)
In fact most of our Dance EdVenture™️ Lesson Plans have been created and developed over 15 years (long before this AI machine took over).
A little bit about the process:
Every Dance EdVenture™️ begins with a real world idea that we want to explore through dance and movement. Since we started as an in school enrichment program most of these ideas will be topics our students are learning in school!
These ideas become the Themes within our Conceptualized-Thematic EdVentures™️
Once we’ve established the theme, we choose one of 18 dance concepts to help us transform that theme into movement!
This allows us to fill in the activities that will best support the exploration of the Theme and Concept. Through our class flow!
Next we decide the Applications that will best support the learning. This is the deep dive that usually takes the most time in the process. What songs best reflect the theme and concept? Which songs should accompany which activity in our class flow? Which props support the exploration and learning? How should those props be organized within our Story Dance Pathway™️ Obstacle Course to best support the exploration of the Theme and Concept? Lastly what resources would be best to send home with the dancers so they can continue the learning at home!!
Lesson Planning should be a well thought out process and we don’t believe in cutting corners.
One bonus step in the process- very Dance EdVenture™️ Lesson Plan we sell on our site and include in our Membership is taught to multiple groups of students and adjusted accordingly to best support the instructor with tips and teaching adjustments designed to best support multiple classrooms and dancers of multiple different ages, stages and abilities!
