Before there was Dakota Sky Stone, before there was a storefront, before there was even a name — there was simply my grandma Ginny and her love for turquoise.
My grandpa traveled the Navajo Nation as an insurance salesman, and soon Ginny began traveling with him. She fell in love with the people, the artistry, and the stories behind Native American jewelry. She would bring pieces back in a small trinket box and sell them to friends. What started as something so simple quickly became a passion.
That passion grew into relationships with Native artists — including one of her first, Justin Morris, who created custom pieces for her in the late ’60s and ’70s — and eventually into her first tiny turquoise shop in the Black Hills in 1971.
She didn’t know she was building a legacy. She was simply following her heart.
Today, 55 years later, her love for turquoise, people, and Native artistry lives on through four generations of our family.
