This abstract ceramic objet d’art titled “Vessel” rises in six faceted, claw-like petals, creating an energetic form with a subtle, grey ash variegated surface.
Born in Hyōgo Prefecture, Ichino grew up in a family of potters in the region of Tamba ware, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns. After studying ceramics in Hiroshima, he returned to his native Tamba, where he trained under his father, the potter Ichino Shinshui, as well as the celebrated contemporary ceramic artist Imai Masayuki. He established his own kiln in 1988.
Ichino first came to national attention in 1995, when his shell-like vessel Kai received the Grand Prix at the 13th Japan Ceramics Exhibition, making him the youngest artist at the time to receive the award. Since then, his work has been celebrated in Japan and abroad for its originality, technical strength, and distinctive sense of form.
Seen in this context, the present work appears to revisit the textural and sculptural concerns of Ichino’s early practice, now with the maturity and confidence of three decades of artistic development.

This Guan-type celadon jar, with its softly rounded silhouette, evokes the fullness of the moon. Its harmonious proportions are enhanced by a luminous blue-green glaze. During the Song dynasty (960–1279), the finely veined crackle pattern that developed within the glaze matrix was highly prized. Created through a precise shrinkage process, the crackles enrich the softly lustrous, creamy blue-green surface, which diffuses light while retaining a refined matte quality.
Among the celebrated contemporary Japanese celadon ceramicists, Suzuki Sansei has revived this aesthetic sense and tradition with deep sensitivity.

The innate charm of Song dynasty celadon ceramics comprises a harmonious integration of natural forms. These silhouettes seamlessly find their place in Kawase Shinobu’s ceramic expressions. The profile of this tall graceful celadon porcelain vase mirrors the elegant form of a lotus stem, evoking strong Buddhist imagery.
Kawase oeuvre incorporates a rich tapestry of natural motifs using flowing, wheel-thrown forms. He is internationally celebrated as one of Japan’s most outstanding masters working within celadon glazing.

We are delighted to introduce works by Usami Shuri to the gallery. Usami is an award-winning contemporary ceramic artist who trained under two celebrated figures whose practices embody distinctly different ceramic traditions: Hayashi Kaku 林 香君 (b. 1953) and the acclaimed Living National Treasure Miura Koheiji 三浦 小平二 (1933–2006).
Built through layers of slip and sgraffito, her surfaces are particularly compelling. Invoking weathered walls and forest floors marked by time, touch, and memory, the longer one looks, the more hidden forms seem to emerge, surfacing through accumulated layers.
In 2024, the Kikuchi Kanjitsu Memorial Tomo Museum in Tokyo hosted its 10th biannual ceramic competition. Among its award-winners was a vessel by Usami, from her “TOWA” series of vessels (pictured). On this series, Usami reflects:
“Imperfection, fluctuation, and distortion are things I wish to affirm as evidence of having lived.”
Her work is on view as part of our current exhibition “Shaping Clay: women artists in contemporary Japanese ceramics,” closing tomorrow!

Trained under her father Suehiro, Koyama Atsuko inherited the dramatic kiln effects central to Bizen ware—yōhen (natural kiln transformations) and hidasuki (scarlet fire markings)—while formulating a unique style. Her works are known for their subtle asymmetry, painterly surfaces, and unexpected combinations of clay and glaze. She incorporates glazes uncommon to traditional Bizen ceramics, from Oribe and Karatsu influences to ash glazes and polychrome surfaces.
Koyama’s approach to glazing is unrestrained, pairing dynamic surface treatments with energetic and expressive forms using Bizen clay.
Her work is on view as part of our current exhibition “Shaping Clay: women artists in contemporary Japanese ceramics,” on view until June 4th.

The celebrated artist Hiruma Kazuyo’s repeated glazing and firing techniques, combined with layers of heat-resistant clay, culminate in an oeuvre of sculptural works that echo the starkness of rugged geological landscapes. Stratified, wave-like surfaces invoke the effects of erosion and sedimentation, creating a sense of deep time passing. Pictured is a work from her most recent series, titled “Fortress at Dusk.”
