As part of Hotfix Passion Project, I was able to demonstrate how to successfully perform the backwards long jump on Super Mario 64 using the drums as a controller to actual N64 hardware. The key here is to use the double bass drum pedals in order to replicate button mashing.

I decided to highlight the framewalk strat as it is a drum specific strat for 70 stars that’s performed by buzz rolling on the second tom. It makes Mario walk all funny and skip the canon to get to the star. It makes for a great moment live! And there’s plenty of magical moments in the full ~80 runs.

⭐️ TIP 1: Harness the Power of Repetition. Muscle memory isn’t magic; it’s consistency. Establishing a "feel" for a complex fill or a steady groove requires intentional, repeated movement over time for the game you're playing. Don’t rush the process; let the repetition do the heavy lifting.
⭐️ TIP 2: Deconstruct the Run. You don’t have to tackle the run in one go. Break it down. Isolate the transition between two stages or focus on a boss battle that has you stuck. Find your sticking points and amalyze the method to fer through them. Mastery of the small sections first, then stitch them together, makes thgns feel a lot less frustrating. It’s much more effective than practicing a mistake over and over in a full run.
⭐️ TIP 3: Stay Relaxed. Speed and precisipn come from relaxation, not tension. If you’re gripping the controller like it'strying to escape, you’re hitting a ceiling on your technique and invited injury into the room. Find a comfortable position you can be in for long periods, relax your shoulders, and take breaks when you feel yourself starting to tense up and stress out. Good technique isn't just about playing better, it’s about being able to play successfully to accomplish your run in a way that feels natural.
