I’ve shared bits of my grief journey over the years, one being how much my Mum and I viewed Christmas differently now living with grief. We could see how difficult this time of year is for so many. And we felt the need to opt out which was freeing for us in our early grief.
We are still opting out in many ways - not getting caught up in the stress anymore, if we want to do things we will but there’s no pressure. If you are a fellow griever you’ll understand that our capacity for others got very small and we got good at saying no 😂 (protecting your peace is very important)
But this year I felt like I wanted to partake in the build up a little more (especially after getting some Christmas joy in Tennessee) and put up a colourful joyful tree with ornaments from TN which has also been accompanied by super colourful balcony decs 😆 I have my Cowboy Luke to thank for bringing a bit of magic back, grateful for this sweet loving man everyday 🙏🏻 surround yourself with people that let you be sad when you need to be. Grief can’t be fixed it’s important you feel seen and validated. You are allowed to be sad that your person is gone. No matter how many years it’s been.
I can’t believe it’s been 5 yrs. It doesn’t feel like it’s been that long yet my life has changed in so many ways, as have I. I feel like my brain chemistry has been altered forever - in ways I hate sometimes. I’ve been getting frustrated recently as I feel like my brain just can’t function as it once did. A symptom of grief I feel like no one talks about.
But I end up always reminding myself what the past 5yrs has thrown at me and I truly cannot be hard on myself. I am proud of how I have navigated such a painful part of my life.
5yrs on and I’m still struggling at times. You may see me “doing better” and going on holiday but you didn’t see the many tears I cried on holiday because my grief was still very much in the forefront of my mind.
I miss my Dad terribly. I still find it hard to believe that it happened and this is my reality. Continued in comments ….
