Tho be honest, Iโve been in two minds about addressing it, because I know people will have different views on this topic.
But itโs something I did want to talk about and clear a few things up on.
Messy play using small, intentional amounts of food isnโt wasteful play, itโs about learning, development, sensory exploration, and creating safe experiences for children. Actually, for some neurodivergent children and fussy eaters, food play is often the first step towards feeling comfortable around food.
I agree we should be mindful when using food for messy play. Everything we do is portioned intentionally, reused where possible, and composted afterwards.
But I also donโt believe a toddler sensory tray is contributing to food poverty in the way people assume.
Iโll always choose creating safe, inclusive spaces where children can explore, learn, and grow ๐
