The book that inspires my brainrot video 🥀

I used to always opt for the extreme, such as deactivating my Instagram account for two years and almost permanently, but this book offers a middle ground by using social media intentionally.

Like “A philosophy of walking,” the author also emphasises solitude deprivation as the harmful side effect of social media addiction. If we never spend time with our own thoughts, straightening and challenging them, we shun growth and welcome stuck.

So often, we’re trapped in an echo chamber of negativity because, in the beginning, it feels good to be validated. For example, believing all men are evil because we consume lots of news about women being cheated on and watch algorithm-picked YouTube videos that trash men—ugh, all of these anti-princess treatment broke guys! Would rather be alone!

But this isn’t healthy at all. You see, someone else’s story doesn’t have to be yours. Instead, what can you do to challenge that belief? And by doing, I mean in real life. By experiencing, because that’s how humans actually learn.

Another interesting concept is reclaiming leisure by engaging in fun projects, which I’m currently trying (see my previous post). Envision a goal that motivates you rather than simply choosing a new habit (last slide). Make hobbies great again!

Still, these can be condensed into a single long article, rather than a book. Or, an academic journal, as he tested the concept and gained interesting feedback. But if you’re not an avid reader, then this book will be perfect for you as it’s easy to read 🍹

I fall in love late, but I do, eventually.

I thought this book would be a paperback version of a thesis manuscript, but it turned out to be an inspiring memoir that speaks to the emptiness I feel during my PhD. I didn’t care about AI; I chose the topic for pragmatic reasons: to secure funding.

But reading how passionate she is and how she navigates the AI world as a muslim woman makes me feel connected to her. I love how she turns curiosity on the smallest thing—making AI emotionally intelligent—into a quest for life. Nothing can shake her belief.

The story isn’t only about how she moved from Egypt to earn a PhD in Cambridge, moved again to MIT Media Lab for a postdoc, and finally founded a company named “Affectiva” with all the ups and downs, but also about her journey as a person.

She got pregnant and gave birth during her PhD, not to mention the sacrifices she made with long-distance marriage and cultural clashes. These are all too real for PhD students out there. Yet, despite all odds, she still believes in that dream.

I was born anew after reading this.

Now, I have three papers in line as milestones for my PhD, because not having smaller goals has been the hardest part of it. I also joined the personal curriculum trend with two side projects:
👹 a creative coding that illustrates AI harms and biases
🎨 an automatic semantic tagging of public domain artworks.

Well, another foolish one:
🔮a CV model to do palmistry, lol. The paper will discuss how AI might enter the realm of esotericism, leading towards human-AI relations beyond the mundane.

Can you see my excitement? This is the side of engineering that I will gladly sign up for, and I think we just have to find that one small tweak that lights our eyes to learn happily and meaningfully.

I believe in this: computer vision will be waay more helpful for artists, designers, and architects than NLP because we have always worked visually! Plus point: it doesn’t pretend to be a human.

The author credits a book titled “Affective Computing” as the one that changed her, and I will definitely credit “Girl Decoded” someday when I make it in this industry.

Thank you—for now.

Happiness is the simplest thing, like walking.

Truly walking. Properly walking.

Not the kind of walking that takes us from point A to point B, but when the intention is simply to… walk. “Outside” is the destination rather than an insignificant interlude we pass between two “insides.”

A walk without earbuds, but one that forces us into solitude. Only then can we turn up the volume of our innermost voices. A rare, almost sacred moment when the world always shouts. This time, we let the scenery swallows us; the sunlight on sandstones and the dancing leaves are somehow… us.

Good, bad, ugly, scary, flickers that redden our cheeks, how thirsty transformers are, we let those thoughts float and flow because: nothing matters. We just have to keep on walking. And yes, we can still have that solitude with a good company whose conversation bounces like soft clouds.

The book took me to one spring day.

We did not have a destination in minds, just wasting time like fools. New on Edinburgh made me glued to my gmaps, but that day, I said,

“Ikutin jalannya aja yuk. Nanti kalau ada belokan, aku pilih belok kiri atau kanan. Terus di belokan selanjutnya, kamu yang pilih. Gitu aja gantian sampai capek. Kalau nyasar, ya udah. Tinggal naik bus. Gimana?”

No bus needed.

We strolled aimlessly, yet ended up back at the place we started walking. It’s not a clean circle, but a moldable loop. Time is an astronomical rubber band.

Months later, I realised, “life” is condensed in that one long afternoon—sunset was shy, too. The book helped me connect the dots.

Whenever I have a hard time today, I tell myself, “Focus on your feet. One step at a time. Don’t think about the pace or the place, and don’t stop.”

And on my chronic uncertainties, “Make any decision, then it’s definitely the right one. Like the bus, you can always turn lost into right.”

In the end, we will always find the way, won’t we?

Turn right.

My life is meaningless—or so I thought, until Dead Poets Society and this book.

An aha moment when I realised: I kept consuming but rarely creating.

I remember making comics as a child, my high school scrapbook, and the numerous projects I had as a design student. But working 8 to 5 gave me a huge creative block, which in turn made me feel worthless. Like Neil—without the ending, hopefully.

Sorry if this is more of my impression while reading rather than a proper review. In essence, the author talks about seven functions of art:

1. Remembering
2. Hope
3. Sorrow (how to suffer more successfully or productively)
4. Rebalancing
5. Self-understanding
6. Growth
7. Appreciation (to otherwise ordinary life and mundane objects)

It reminds us not only to see Art with a capital A, like old masters’ paintings in museums, but also to see art as an everyday practice innate to every human being, with a particular mission: healing. To feel whole and connected to life.

I never shared any of my projects widely because I’m afraid people won’t like them. If people won’t buy a novel that I crafted wholeheartedly, won’t it tear my heart into pieces?

Luckily, having this YouTube channel has been helpful. Sometimes, a sensitive part of me is sad when a video doesn’t get as many views, even though I thoroughly enjoy the creation process. I would be elated, then depressed afterwards—should I stop?

But I learned how to be okay. Posting or publishing your works needs courage, and that is great on its own. I already reap all the benefits while creating, so the rest is a bonus.

Oh, and reading this book feels like stepping into a gallery! 🏛🎨
