“In the Spaces Remaining” is a solo exhibition by Thương Hoài Trần, exploring the complexities of the Vietnamese American immigrant experience through personal photographic archives. Examining the physical and emotional spaces between past and present, memory and reality, the exhibition highlights the challenges of finding a place within them.

Coinciding with this announcement, my solo exhibition “Cho Gia Đình: For Family” opens, today, June 10th and will run till July 3rd at Northeastern Illinois University’s Fine Arts Center Gallery. This exhibition features “Ông Bà” as one of the central pieces.

“Ông Bà” utilizes the process of painted warps to create the portraits of my family members. Beginning in June of 2021, this series originally started as a way to depict my grandparents. In January of 2022, I had the opportunity to attend The Studios at MASS MoCA Residency Program—during which I began to expand this series by creating two more painted warps that depict imagery of my parents. I consider this body of work a continuous series, with ongoing revisions and additions to reflect changes in the family over time.

During the run of Thương Hoài Trần’s solo exhibition, 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘱𝘢, we invite you off-site from the gallery and into our Mana Contemporary studio, where Hoài Trần will present an artist talk at the loom. They will share their additive process of painting portraits of family members through dyes that saturate the warp yarns before they are woven at the loom. As they complete two new weavings in their "Ông Bà" series at LMRM, we will get a glimpse into one of many ways artists are bridging the space between image and materiality through the language of weaving.
Gallery hours at Open Shed will be from 1-4pm the following Sunday, May 5. Otherwise the show is open by appointment only. Please email to set up a time to visit the exhibition 🏵️
Each piece showcased in this exhibition serves as both a tribute and an exploration of familial narratives shaped by the immigrant experience. Hoài Trần unravels the threads of their family's history, prompting viewers to contemplate the transient nature of memories. Over time, memories fade—landscapes change, and faces become indistinct. Striving to recover unspoken histories embedded in their family lineage while celebrating and paying tribute to portraits of their grandparents and family members. The act of remembering and honoring becomes a delicate balance between preservation and excavation of familial history.
