大家好 hello everyone from Taipei, Taiwan as we kick off our delegation! 🌾🥬🌶️🫛🫚
We’ll be visiting farms in Pinglin, Yilan and Hualien over the next week with our pilot program organizers and delegates.
Follow along for updates on our Stories as we learn from knowledge keepers, share experiences and build landworker-to-landworker solidarity 👩🏻🌾🧑🏻🌾👩🏽🌾.
A huge thank you to everyone in our community who donated to our delegation. We surpassed our initial fundraising goal and could not have done it without your enthusiasm and support.
We would also like to give a special thank you to our generous organizational and foundation support from the Sye Fund,, and. 非常感謝!
Li Schmidt is a farmer and storyteller based in Los Angeles, CA. She started Cultural Roots Nursery in 2020 with a mission to heal the connection between the Asian diaspora and ancestral foodways by increasing the abundance and availability of culturally important heritage plants.
By fostering education and empowerment around learning how to grow food, she works to support a food system where all can access culturally relevant foods. She holds a M.S. in Community Development with a focus on sustainable food systems and is a farmer member of the California Farmer Justice Collaborative and the Asian American Farmers Alliance.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO ORGANIZE THIS DELEGATION?
“As a Taiwanese American farmer, it was an eye-opening experience to be able to meet Taiwanese farmers growing the same crops that I grow, but in the cultural context of where these crops originate.
I’m hoping to continue deepening my knowledge of these foods that are important to many Asian diaspora communities and to share that knowledge with growers at home in the US.”
We are deeply moved by our community’s incredible response to our delegation. Since our launch two weeks ago, through donations big and small, we have already brought in more than half of our initial goal of $15K — and have confirmed some exciting commitments we can’t wait to share! (Watch this space 🙏)
Beyond the funds raised, we’re touched by every comment and story from people expressing how much this program resonates with them; how it connects to their own diaspora explorations; how they would love to do something similar with their own communities of origin 💚
Next up: We look forward to introducing our organizers, partners and delegates in this feed, as we count down the days til our trip 🥬🫚🌾

Co-organized by and for Taiwanese-/Asian-American land workers, this learning journey welcomes 8 folks to the island for cultural exchange, skill sharing and international solidarity building, in collaboration with Taiwanese farmers and organizing partners.
It’s a critical time on the clock of the world — for Taiwan, for climate change, for people-to-people interdependence at home and across the world. We’re grateful to practice our collective commitment to strengthening agroecology and food sovereignty work, by connecting our movements across the Pacific.

Last year was my first time visiting Taiwan as a more experienced farmer. I saw more sweet potatoes growing around different parts of the island (photo 2) and had the opportunity to meet likeminded farmers, chefs, and people working in the food system. I also went to try to find the urban farm I had visited years ago, but it was no longer there and was walled off for construction.
I may never learn the story of what happened to the farm or the farmer. But I’m glad to announce that I will be continuing to be add to my story as a Taiwanese American farmer through living in Taiwan for a longer period of time. I’ll be here for the entire spring and I’m excited to keep sharing about Taiwanese food and farming over the course of the next several months.
While I’m gone CRN will still be going in a slightly different capacity. We won’t be at the farmers market, but I’m so grateful that the farm’s apprentices from last year, and, will be managing the greenhouse and growing plants for pop-ups and special orders. We’ll be posting more about that soon!
In the meantime, thanks for reading and for following the journey 🍠🌱🇹🇼

Featured in the video are scenes from the workshops and harvest dinner that we organized this year thanks to funding from the California BIPOC Agroecology Network (BIPOCAN). We were able to distribute hundreds of free plants and seeds and had 150+ people participate. We’ll be publishing videos of those events soon!
🎥 Please follow to see more of their amazing work!
🌱 Special thanks to the other farmers who have collectively tended the nursery and land this year and who also make an appearance in this video:
