What a fun field trip for our ECE students! As part of their learning about community and transportation, students enjoyed an exciting train ride aboard the Niles Canyon Railway, a living railroad museum where history comes to life. It was a wonderful way for students to connect their classroom learning to a real-life experience while exploring the important role trains played in building communities throughout California and the nation.

Students traveled from Niles in Fremont to Sunol and back, enjoying the beautiful scenery, the train's fun vibrations, and a refreshing breeze on a warm day. We were also so happy that many families joined the trip, making it an even more special and memorable experience for our students!
CSD Adventures partnered with Ride A Wave (RAW) for an unforgettable day at Cowell Beach in Santa Cruz. Students participated in a range of water activities, including swimming, surfing, bodyboarding, and kayaking.

The experience also included time with RAW volunteers, who engaged with students through ASL communication and supported activities throughout the day. Students were recognized with participation medals and received event items provided by RAW.

The event also included breakfast and lunch service provided by local Santa Cruz restaurants. Families attended and supported students throughout the day, creating a strong sense of community at the event.

CSD Adventures looks forward to continued collaboration with Ride A Wave in future programs.

Our Kindergarten class has been studying motion in their science unit and recently had the exciting opportunity to see science come to life through a collaboration with our high school students!

High school chemistry students launched rockets as part of their final class project, giving our kindergarteners a chance to connect what they have been learning in class to a real-life experience. The students were excited to observe motion, force, and speed in action as they cheered on the rocket launches.

For safety during the rocket launch activities, a firetruck was on site in case of emergencies. The kindergarten students also had the fun opportunity to explore the fire truck up close, meet the firefighters, and even touch and learn more about it as part of the experience.

It was a wonderful collaboration between our High School and ECE programs, creating a fun and meaningful learning experience for students of all ages!
Through our Little and Big Eagles program, kindergarten students are paired with high school mentors to foster leadership, confidence, language development, and a sense of community. Deaf peer role models play an important part in this program, helping younger students build communication skills while showing them what’s possible for their own futures.

To celebrate the end of another meaningful year together, our Little and Big Eagles enjoyed a fun bowling field trip to wrap up the program. There were lots of smiles, laughter, and special memories shared as some of our Big Eagles prepare for graduation and our kindergarten students get ready to move up to elementary school.

Thank you to our Big Eagles for a wonderful year of mentorship, leadership, and support for our younger generation of students!
We are proud to announce that Liz Jarashow will serve as the Commencement Speaker for the CSD Class of 2026 Commencement Ceremony.

Today, Liz shares her experiences to inspire others, especially Deaf individuals, to explore the outdoors, challenge themselves, and experience nature's beauty. She returns to CSD as a trailblazer whose perseverance, courage, and determination continue to inspire the next generation of Deaf youth. Liz looks forward to sharing her experiences, lessons learned, and words of encouragement with the Class of 2026 as they begin their own journeys beyond CSD.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our final ASL Storytime of the year at the Fremont Main Library. It was a wonderful evening filled with storytelling, learning, and community connection.

A special thank you to our Deaf storytellers, Sarah Stainslow and Gary Sidansky, for bringing stories to life while honoring nurses and doctors and remembering the history of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Thank you to everyone who attended our ASL Storytimes throughout the year and helped make every evening so memorable. We loved celebrating together through books and storytelling, and truly appreciate the community’s continued support of ASL Storytime. We look forward to continuing our monthly storytimes again in September!

A heartfelt thank you to the Fremont Main Library and CSD Fremont librarian Joann Ikeda for this wonderful collaboration and for helping to make ASL Storytime such a meaningful experience for the community.

CSD Library had the honor of welcoming Mychal Threets, a widely acclaimed librarian and literacy advocate from Fairfield, California, known for his viral “library joy” videos on social media. He is also the PBS resident librarian and host of the reboot of *Reading Rainbow*. Recently, he authored the newly released book, “I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Library Joy.”

During his visit, Mychal met with our ECE–High School students to discuss the importance and joy of libraries. As he shared, “I grew up in libraries, raised by libraries, loved everything about libraries. It is a place where you can just be as you are, you can come on inside, you can take joy in that as an introvert [or] an extrovert.”

He encouraged everyone to own a library card and discover the joy of visiting libraries. No matter your age, interests, or favorite genre, there is something for everyone to enjoy through books and reading.

Mychal is also a strong mental health advocate. He shared important insights about embracing individuality, understanding that it is okay to feel different, and learning how to advocate for ourselves. His message also highlighted the importance of creating inclusive spaces where the Deaf community and all learners can fully access literacy and experience joy.

We were fortunate to have him on campus to share his experiences, positivity, and passion for literacy and mental health. He also participated in a story-signing video for his book alongside our students, staff, and families.
