During the war, Confederate soldiers had turned Charleston’s Race Course into an open-air prison for Union troops. Hundreds died there from exposure and disease and were buried in a mass grave.
But on May 1, 1865, something extraordinary happened.
Twenty-eight Black laborers exhumed the bodies of the fallen Union soldiers and gave them proper burials with military honors. They built an arch over the cemetery entrance engraved with the words: “Martyrs of the Race Course.”
Then more than 10,000 people gathered in remembrance. Women and children carried flowers. Black schoolchildren sang hymns. Union soldiers marched alongside the famed 54th Massachusetts and United States Colored Troops in one of the first large public tributes to America’s war dead.
It was an act of dignity. Of grief. Of unity. And of hope in a country that had been shattered by hatred and war.
Like many important stories from that era, this moment was largely buried by history. But just three years later, General John A. Logan established a national day of remembrance for fallen soldiers — a tradition that would eventually become Memorial Day.
This Memorial Day feels heavy for many Americans. Our country is divided. Wars rage overseas. Families continue to send sons and daughters into danger, and many carry burdens most of us will never fully understand.
But Memorial Day reminds us that behind every headline and every flag is a human life. Someone’s child. Someone’s spouse. Someone who believed this country — imperfect as it is — was still worth sacrificing for.
Today, I’m deeply grateful for the men and women who gave their lives in service to this nation. Freedom has never been free.
And maybe one of the best ways we can honor their sacrifice is by fighting, together, for the kind of country worthy of it — with courage, truth, humility, and unity. #memorialday🇺🇸
Tuesday's midterm election in Kentucky showed us what happens when an elected official tries to hold powerful interests accountable.
Thomas Massie - a man widely respected by his constituents & colleagues — was targeted for political destruction in what became the most expensive midterm election in American history. All because he stood up to Donald Trump.
A functioning democracy requires truth and a free press. It requires elected officials whose loyalty belongs first to the people they represent — not billionaires, foreign lobbying groups, or political machines.
But this election showed how money, media influence, and coordinated propaganda can be weaponized against a candidate willing to ask dangerous questions.
Thomas Massie dared to ask why American institutions protect wealthy p$&ophiles while allowing victims to be re-traumatized, silenced and mocked. And so the Epstein class tried to silence him.
When Massie challenged expanding war powers and questioned America’s relationship with “our greatest ally”, he was branded disloyal. When he introduced legislation requiring AIPAC to register as a foreign agent, the target on his back grew even larger.
Massie was one of the very few elected officials willing to fight against expanded surveillance, unchecked AI immunity protections, forever chemicals and the government's overreach into private life. He believed that taxpayer dollars should serve American citizens — not endless wars or billionaire interests.
And for that, he became unacceptable.
What happened in Kentucky should disturb every American — regardless of party.
Because when elections can be flooded with outside money, manipulated through media narratives, and steered by elite interests, voters are no longer choosing their representatives: the representatives are being chosen for them.
It's my hope that this loss turns into an opportunity - that we the people will have the courage, like Thomas Massie, to choose principles over power.

Today, that feels less like movie dialogue & more like prophecy.
Artificial intelligence has opened a door we don't have the power to close. Its founders have warned it might lead to the end of the human race.
Families are being forced from their homes; wells that have nourished land for generations are running dry; resources are being routed away from humans and towards AI infrastructure & new data centers.
Our future is being shaped by a system that treats humankind like an inconvenience. Our creativity is being reduced to a utility. Art is mere measurable content. People are just data points.
And to survive in this new economy, we've been pushed to perform in an algorithm specifically programmed to suppress human flourishing.
And so, as we stare into our screens, there's a very real battle for our consciousness at play. We must not surrender.
Our stories, our struggles, our grief, our joy, our imagination, and our unique human ability to create beauty from suffering cannot be replicated by a machine trained on borrowed humanity.
Yes, choosing human-made work may soon be less efficient. It will be more financially expensive. But I increasingly believe it will also become sacred.
Because the fight ahead isn’t just about technology.
It’s about whether we still believe there is something holy and irreplaceable about being human.
And I do.
We don’t want to have a family brunch.
We don’t want to respond to anything that starts with "Mom.” What we want is complete and total silence. We want to wake up in a clean hotel room, alone, and temporarily forget we are responsible for other human beings.
We don’t want to make one decision.�We don’t want to hear one complaint.�We do not even want to THINK for or about anyone else.
But because moms have too much guilt to ever say this out loud to you, I’m saying it for all of us:
If you want your wife or partner to have an amazing Mother’s Day:�Do not ask her questions.�Do not let the kids ask her questions.�Do not interrupt her peace. Even if it's to ask how you can bring her more peace.
At most, pretend the mother of your children is a rare tiny woodland creature you are trying not to scare away. You can drop off a snack. Or even better, coffee.�Leave quietly.�Protect her solitude with your life.
Then the next day, you can reintroduce the mother to her natural habitat. She will be rested and emotionally stabilized and happy.

As I shared in the article, when I was growing up, I never viewed art as a possible career. I didn't know successful, full-time artists and financial constraints and fears pushed me to pursue a more predictable career path. For a decade, I worked in politics, communications and public policy.
Eventually that path led me to focus specifically on anti-human trafficking and child online safety (still a passion of mine!).
But the heavy nature of the job took a toll on my mental health, and when I had my kids, I took what I thought would be a sabbatical, and I turned to art as a source of light and healing.
I never anticipated that I would become a full-time artist, in fact, right after college, I took an aptitude test that basically told me that I couldn't and shouldn't be an artist. 😂
Just goes to show, you never know what is in store for your life!

I absolutely love riding the historic Linha 1 tram along the river Douro to the fabulous Foz beach district. These delightful trams have beautiful wood interiors, brass controls and dials and are maintained for tourists and transportation enthusiasts.
I also love visiting the old historic churches including the Igreja dos Carmelitas and Museu de Arte Sacra da Igreja de Santo Ildefonso, located a short walk from the Arts Hotel Porto. These churches and the stunning Porto Sao Bento train station are covered with some of the stunning blue ceramic tile the city is known for.
On our first night in Porto, we enjoyed dining at the Arts Hotel Porto’s fabulous restaurant in the hotel’s serene courtyard where every dish showcased the fresh flavors of the region.
Traditional Portuguese desserts have two main ingredients — egg yolks and sugar — and one of my favorites to grab was the Pastel de nata as I wandered the city streets and admired the beautiful vistas and strolled across the double deck Dom Luis I Bridge that spans the River Douro.
Whether you stroll the city streets, enjoy an espresso at Porto’s Cafe Majestic, or visit one of Porto’s fabulous museums, or take time to relax in Arts Hotel Porto’s wading pool, the city extends some of the best hospitality I’ve experienced in Europe. Porto, Portugal is absolutely a city to love!”
