because CRAZY BROKE ASIAN never had a plitical agenda, everybody should have the right to share their story, no matter how “sensitive” it may seem for others. It doesn’t erase anyone’s hardships.
I wrote this song as a letter to my parents about how we both left home.
They left their country for freedom. I left home to survive in my own way.
They loved me most… but also hurt me most. I grew up feeling guilty for choosing myself, like I was betraying their sacrifice. Leaving gave us space to heal and understand each other.
If you’ve ever had a complicated relationship with your parents, I hope this reminds you, it’s okay to choose yourself and still find understanding in the end.

I think this is one of the most difficult videos I’ve had to edit so far, maybe because that’s my genuine observation from sifting through hundreds of clips of my upbringing: that it felt and seemed conditional.
Sometimes it makes me wonder if I didn’t get so much support by so many people (for CRAZY BROKE ASIAN) would my parents still be proud, regardless of external validation?
Regardless, i know I’m most grateful and proud of my family for healing our relationships with one another (and still trying)
