Monster Hunter features fantastically absurd weapons that could not be lifted in real life in real materials. It's great fun to make them into cosplay props. Even when scaling down to 60-80%, that are still big enough to violate many con policies as well as the cosplayers muscles.

There's some idea that props and armor need to be as close to in-game accurate as possible. I don't care about that at all. I get why that's a standard in competitions, but I'm not competing in contests. I'm 38. I don't have any interest in wearing a set and carrying a prop that will have the potential for long term injury. There are minor, and sometimes major, compromises that can be made to improve the comfort and safety of props and armor. Even in the side by side comparison they will look fine. But for the most part, people will be impressed in person in the moment with the level of craftsmanship. Only the most deliberate negger (one who constantly negs) will have a comment like "yeah but the proportions are off" or "you're missing X piece."

One of the benefits of being a geriatric cosplayer is that I am not remotely embarrassed to make compromises in the process of making my work for myself. I don't think twice about telling people that I make work for that there will be compromises. And I'll toot my own horn here, I don't think the consequences of my compromises have been all that consequential. 😙

1) Drawing is super important to see that the shapes can line up relative to each other in both axe and sword mode and everywhere in between while transforming.

2) It's very important to build in the order I have laid out (sword, body, axe, details) all the while testing the mechanism to make sure it transforms without obstruction.

Q: What glue do you use to glue the layers together?
A: I prefer the clear gorilla glue. It's strong, a little flexible, and does not gum up blades when cut through. It's also great for adding a stiff gloss coating to claws, spikes, teeth, and eyes. Hot glue on low settings works in a pinch. Construction adhesive works if applied in straight lines. Spray adhesive is awesome and fast but unforgiving and toxic.

Q: What do you cut it with?
A: I cut the layers out with a band or scroll saw. I use a razor knife to carve. And sanding blocks when necessary.

Q: Where do you get it?
A: Typically Home Depot, but Lowe's also carries it as do other industrial suppliers.

Q: What do you seal it with?
A: I usually seal it with mod podge or flexbond. Wood glue works in a pinch but be careful because it's very runny. I have experimented with coating using different materials including worbla (silver rath hammer), epoxy putty (gore hbg), poly pellets (gold and silver rath dbs), and foam clay (monster babies). All have their advantages and disadvantages. I like foam clay because it's accessible, non toxic, flexible, and it sticks right to xps.

Q: What do you paint it with?
A: I usually prime with spray paint or plastidip and paint with acrylic. Airbrush also works great.

Q: Does it sand well?
A: Yes. I use 80, 100, and 200 grits most frequently.

Q: Is it heavy?
A: No. A 2" x 4' x 8' sheet weights 7.5lbs. that size sheet will cover most large projects including like my agito blade.
