The Year of my Life

2020 has been the year of a life time. For some it’s felt like a life time has passed, it has aged us more than just 12 months and that it will never end.

Personally it really has been there best year of my life, the events of 2020 have given me the perfect platform for reflection on what I really want for my life and what I’m going todo moving forward.

Ive had similar “Self-Realisations” in the passed but honestly they were nothing compared to this time round. In August I decided id had enough of what I saw in the mirror and reflected on in my mind.

I was sick and tired of not being where I wanted to be physically, mentally and spiritually, living the mediocre ok life was not giving me the life I knew I could be striving for.

My Only Fear in life is that I never live up to my full potential and die with my music still inside me. I came to the stark reality that if I carried on life the way it was then exactly that would happen and Id regret it forever.

The Universe puts amazing people in our lives, my great friend invited me to start 75 hard challenge with him. I had attempted this a couple of times before but failed, clearly the pain and discomfort of my circumstances wasn’t enough to keep me on track. I knew this time though it was the challenge I needed to kick start my life and change the direction of it for good.

On the 1st September I downloaded the app and joined them BathFitFam community by starting bootcamp classes for the first in my life. These 2 actions have been the key to my consistency. Having the App reminding me and keeping me accountable every day to the tasks that need to be completed have set the habits I needed for my body and mind.

32 days in I failed the challenge as I got a nasty back injury and the rules state that you have to start again if you miss one day. This is where the BathFitFam community came to the rescue. The Love, Support and Challenge of all the members and Trainers made it easy to get back on the horse and go again.

Validating yourself

I love this photo cause I don’t give a shit what i look like.

I was demonstrating an exercise, slipped, got stuck and thought it was the perfect moment for a snap of me trying to style it out

So often we have this burning desire to be liked. On social media this manifests in posts that are trying to be “cool”, “stylish” and “serious”

The truth i have found from past experience is that what you really want is to like yourself and you are wanting others to like you to validate the fact that you are cool or a good person.

This is why you might freak out if you think someone doesn’t like you, something you’ve done or is talking bad about you behind your back, this then starts a vicious cycle of self deprecating thoughts. “Why don’t they like me? What did I say wrong? What did I do wrong? What’s wrong with me?”

Well you sexy legend the truth is that, 1. You will never be all things to all people. 2. If you were everyone’s cup of tea you would be a mug and I’m sure you don’t want that.

The real question to ask is “What is it that I’m not happy about in my own thoughts and actions that are making me want the approval of others?”

Perhaps there is something in your life, thoughts or associations to the past that you are not happy about that you want to change but realise that this is the real cause of why you want others to validate who you are.

It’s ok not to be ok

After a few days of coming out of lockdown I’ve noticed something very interesting in lots of people and friends I have spoken to.

When asking others “How are you?” With a warm heart felt smile they reply “Ok.” We all know this “Ok”, the “Ok” that isn’t really “Ok”

Last week I was not “Ok” for most of it and when people would ask me if I was “Ok” or “How are you?” I’d be honest and say “It’s been a tough one today because of...” or “I’m better now that I’ve dealt with...”

Being honest takes courage as it means you are being vulnerable to another, it’s not about being the boy who cried wolf it means being honest with someone asking you “how are you” actually helps you be honest with yourself and only when you can be honest with yourself can you recognise what’s happening and how you can adjust to improve it.

Next time someone asks you “How are you?” Take a moment and think about it and be as honest as you can. Giving someone who cares for you an honest reply so you can really help yourself take some of the weight of your shoulders.

Deep Work

What you see here is 15 years of practice, no talent just consistently applying myself to the craft

When I first saw a Martial Arts class I was instantly hooked I loved the energy, focus, discipline and spiritual elements to what it meant to be a martial artist.

Even though I loved it I had to commit 100%, luckily I didn’t have to come to this realisation I was told when I joined “Practice Everyday” there was no other option it was “you want to be apart this club you put in the hard work away from the club at home”

This instruction seems intense and over kill, honestly at the time of being 15 I didn’t know any different and didn’t ask any questions. I aspired to be the best I could be and one day hopefully be as good as the instructors at the front of the class.

Everyday after school I practiced for a minimum of an hour (don’t believe me ask my Mum as I would practice in the living room right next to her and my sister while they were watching TV) then it was 2 hours intense training every Sunday, I missed one class in 6 months.

Those 6 months I spent practicing everyday was my Deep Work that set the foundation for my abilities today. I realise looking back that sometimes you have to go at it alone with no praise or pats on the back and do the work again and again and again.

I feel immense pride in these photos and know that I have earned the skills I have now.

Feeling Proud of yourself is not just a mindset it comes from a decision and commitment to get yourself into Deep Work for a long, long time.

Set backs are inevitable, life can be going better than ever and then suddenly something is sweeper away from you that you were certain was a sure thing.

Being positive that your whole life is going to be positive is a bad strategy and will ultimately fuel strong feelings of disappointment

We are all going to get disappointed in life but you have to prepare for these moments by thinking about what might happen if that opportunity or circumstance doesn’t go the way you plan for it at the start so you won’t be shocked and horrified when it takes a bad turn

Have faith and remember that set backs are set ups for an even greater come back! It might not feel like it right now and the disappointment will linger for a while but control those emotions as soon as you can to look at the future positively again!

DONT Man Up

When a trauma hits you you’ll need to give yourself space to grieve for what’s happened.

You can try and push through all the emotions and you will only get one thing out of it, lots of unhappiness and disappointment about everything in your life.

I can put my hand on my heart and tell you this is true as this is where I was 2 years ago. I had lost my relationship and quit a job I once loved. I was dying inside everyday with trying to hold it all together without actually realising what I had gone through.

You need to stop and give yourself a break to regroup, if you say to yourself I can’t do that I have to much responsibility and to many people rely on me. Remember those circumstances and people relying on you are only getting about 40% of who you really are and you can give them so much more if you just take a little break.

Just remember that one day you will come out the other side better than ever before knowing that what your going through has happened to make you a stronger person one day.

Appreciation instead of Expectation

In the modern world we have everything at our finger tips and it can make us a little entitled

So when things inevitably don’t go to plan then we are instantly disappointed and think why on earth did that not happen the way we wanted it to

When appreciate your situations instead your whole world changes. For years I was expecting everything to happen exactly my way and when it didn’t I was a very very unhappy boy. But there is always something to appreciate about any situation and that’s where the meaning can be found.

Next time something doesn’t go your way ask yourself “What can I appreciate about this upset?” It will be difficult when you first try but stick with it and you’ll be amazing at how your attitude to life changes!

There’s no one like you 👁👁

You probably look at yourself and get very familiar with who you are, so familiar in fact that you might just start to think your an average individual with an average life like most of the people on the planet.

Then when you see that inevitable insta post of someone’s life going brilliant, you get deflated and think that you haven’t got anything to offer the world.

As says here once you fall deeply in love with yourself only then can you realise and know there is no one like you.

When you do find yourself a lot of people are going to be intimidated by you and who you are they’ll either want you to “quiet it down” or “liven yourself up” but don’t let the bastards grind you down to what they think you should be.

I watch this every morning (amongst other videos) to remind myself of the above message and I always bounce out of the house with an amazing starting attitude and love for who I am and what I bring to the table!

Follow your dreams and love yourself no matter what anyone says!
