Rembrandt tenía sólo veinticinco años cuando recibió el encargo de pintar a los cirujanos de Ámsterdam. El retrato en cuestión representa la lección de anatomía impartida por el doctor Nicolaes Tulp en enero de 1632.
Rembrandt retrató a los cirujanos en plena acción, por lo todos miran a puntos distintos de la escena. El dinamismo de la escena se ve acentuado por el marcado contraste entre luz y sombra.

El manejo suele ser sintomático:
* Control de fiebre con acetaminofén.
* Evitar ácido acetilsalicílico por riesgo de síndrome de Reye.
* Antihistamínicos para el prurito.
* Higiene cutánea para disminuir sobreinfección.
El antiviral Aciclovir puede indicarse en casos seleccionados, idealmente dentro de las primeras 24 horas del exantema, sobre todo en adolescentes, adultos o pacientes de riesgo.
La prevención principal es la vacuna contra la varicela, que ha disminuido mucho las hospitalizaciones y complicaciones.
