We are Getting ready for the memorial service of two of my most loved friend's wonderful mama tomorrow. A woman who had the best sense of humour and even as a very young man talked to me like an equal, a rare gift, among many she had. It makes me feel so grateful for my own grandmother Mossie, seen here with me at a party, a similar age to wonderful Diana we are saying goodbye to and who has the same qualities- of course they even shared a boyfriend or two apparently as young things. Last moments in this seductive country and view from my Alexandria balcony drenched in dusk light. I chose to stay here because of the peerless view of one of my favourite mosques, shrine of the 13th-century Al Andalusian mystic Al-Mursi Abul-'Abbas and a riotous delight of Neo-Mamluk styles. I have only brought one group to this city so far but god were they enchanted and exciting plans unfolding for the future. The road less travelled is the road paved with the most special memories and deeply genuine people encountered away from the tourism cacaphony. I hope you will join me, and my much loved collaborators, here to experience where old Egypt meets the Levant in a tidal wave for the senses. In the harbour distance can be the seen the iconic club where delicious Souvlaki, and without exaggeration, the best Greek Salad and Chocolate Mousse I have ever tasted were served to the sounds of vintage Nana Mouskouri and the crashing waves 🌊
A convivial soiree chez my talented friend Art Deco Zamalek home for our group, who have been so appreciative, FUN, curious and game for everything. The whole evening was so enveloping, effortless and warm - rather like Goya herself. Gracias Hermosa! 🥂

The Pigeon Houses of Al Moudira: Clay needles the horizon of many rural villages; unassuming structures, polka-dotted with nooks and nests and the song of Egyptian Swift pigeons. Otherwise known as dovecotes or pigeon houses, gheyas or Burj hamam, these “earthen chimneys” are one of Egypt’s signature sights, looming higher than the squat, red-brick buildings in their periphery.

Used as a means for both farming and raising pigeons, dovecotes have featured in local history as far back as ancient Egypt. Between the need for manure for grain farming, and the staple addition of pigeon to the Egyptian diet, locales such as Mit Ghamer, and Roman-remains of Karanis have featured them in prolific numbers.Egyptians have a lingering fondness for pigeons; they are useful and resourceful creatures in local lore. Pigeons are allowed to linger on farmlands, seen as a “special voice” of wisdom and family structure. They are taught to recognize dovecotes as their home through regular feeding and friendly interaction, where they are socialized to more domesticated forms of living.

Egyptian cuisine, colourful as it is, reserves a special place for the inclusion of pigeons. Most famously is hamam mahshi, a stuffed-pigeon dish where the birds are filled with rice or freekeh, onions, and chopped giblets. Spiced with cinnamon, cumin, pepper, and nuts, they are then roasted and served whole. Because of its prolific addition to the Egyptian diet, a local economy has formed around pigeons – within urban and rural communities alike.

The dovecotes, nonetheless, remain a sight to behold, and during arid sunsets, these humble creatures can be seen soaring in unison, down the Nile, and into their homes. My favourite ceramic plate hanging at home in Delhi has an iconic 18th-century one of these painted on it.

A private and fabulous lunch à la française at a private club here in Cairo - entirely arranged through a personal connection and beautifully done with dishes produced under silver domes, fez-wearing staff beaming welcomes and a tour of the astonishing art collection held in this imposing and largely shut away belle epoque building which has counted some of the country's most interesting and distinguished figures among its members. This is what a bespoke cultural tour like this is made of - even if it did mean I had to hunt up and down the blissfully rackety Aswan Corniche at 11pm for a tie 😂 before being kindly presented with a midnight-blue Hermes one as a thank you from the group. Presentable for a moment. The Strawberry Charlotte was a thing of beauty.
