Usually, I follow a photographer’s work for a while before I write about them. Not this time. I only came upon Cooper Seykens’ portrait series a couple of days ago but I fell so hard for these pictures that I just had to share them immediately. I don’t actually know anything about Cooper except what I read on a single IG post (and that he lives in Mexico City) which described how he’s he spent the last four years documenting Charreria, the Mexican tradition that, he wrote, “shaped the origins of the Texan rodeo.” I find his portraits to be drop-dead gorgeous, continually surprising (some show the subject in motion, some obscure the subject’s face, many mix a vintage charm with a modern sensibility, etc.), and absolutely arresting. Without further ado:

Cooper Seykens is a photographer with a keen eye for portraiture. From a young age, he began creating black-and-white street portraits during his travels through the United States. In this period, he developed a clear and authentic visual style, focused on capturing the character of his subjects.
Although Seykens mainly works with a digital camera, his photography is strongly influenced by the look of nineteenth-century wet plate photography. This historical technique, in which light-sensitive emulsions are applied directly to glass plates, gives the images a distinctive and highly detailed quality.
In his exhibition at MOYA, Seykens presents a series of portraits of Mexican charrería, alongside portraits of members of the Mexican community photographed in traditional clothing. The images feel timeless, with no clear beginning or end, yet captured at exactly the right moment.
