Just like LEGO, video games are built from small, independent parts. Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) lets game worlds snap together piece by piece, with players, rules, and environments all acting as their own objects.
No single part knows the whole game, but when they connect, something unexpected emerges. Rather than being fully constructed in advance, the experience unfolds through play.

Albert Camus famously wrote that 'one must imagine Sisyphus happy'. Condemned to eternity pushing a boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, Sisyphus might easily succumb to despair. But by embracing the struggle itself, rather than the goal, he finds meaning in the absurd.
We find the same struggle in Donkey Kong (1981), where there is no end to the task at hand. The barrels never stop rolling and even reaching the top only returns you to the bottom. The game is endless with no possibility of 'winning'.
Yet by remaining in a state of play, the futility becomes secondary. What matters is the movement, the timing, the climb itself. The barrels never stop, but neither does the game.

Blaise Agüera y Arcas writes: 'Communication is meaningless if it is fully predictable. If the receiver can already infer the message with certainty, no information has been transmitted.' ('What Is Intelligence?', 2025)
In the 90s, authenticity was everything. It wasn't just about sincerity, it was also about informational irreducibility. DIY bands made lo-fi sound on purpose and failure was intentionally visible. Why? Because the unpredictability was proof of human presence. Authenticity meant that it couldn't have come from someone else and couldn't be faked. In this way, authentic acts carry entropy.
In Guitar Hero (2005, PS2) the joy is undeniable: the flow, rhythm and applause. But the system is designed so that every "correct" action is already known, and every successful performance confirms this expectation. Deviation is punished and not explored. From an information perspective, nothing new is being expressed. The expressive decisions have already been made and you are active, but silent.
As Kurt Cobain writes in Nirvana's "In Bloom" (featured in this piece): "He's the one who likes all our pretty songs, and he likes to sing along, and he likes to shoot his gun, but he knows not what it means".

Sometimes wearing a mask or costume is what allows us to move through a space. During the 1970s disco era, bell-bottoms, a gold chain, and a moustache granted entry to the checkerboard dance floor, and permission to move differently. In the same way, when Super Mario puts on his Tanooki or Fire Mario costumes, he is granted new ways of moving through the game, abilities that make survival possible where it once wasn't. In both cases, the costume becomes a tool for stayin' alive.

Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) is built on the fantasy that speed can outrun consequence. That death can be defeated if we move forward fast enough, and that stillness is a form of failure. The game equates survival with momentum: as long as Sonic is in motion, he persists. Yet this logic ultimately collapses. No amount of speed prevents the countdown from reaching zero. No momentum escapes the timer. Sonic reveals a deeper truth: acceleration does not abolish death, it just delays the moment we must confront it. In this way, speed becomes a form of denial. It becomes a refusal to pause long enough to acknowledge finitude. Stillness (framed as danger in the game) emerges as a quiet counterforce of acceptance. To stop is to resist the compulsion to outrun what cannot be escaped.

It isn't unusual for audio/visual works to represent sound with imagery. For example: waveforms, particles, or animations that follow music. Rez (PS2, 2001) did something fundamentally different. It treated sound, image, and action as the same signal rendered through different senses.
In Rez, rhythm became space, color became timbre, and your controller input became the composition. There was no metaphorical layer. What you saw, heard, and did were inseparable, creating a form of digital synesthesia.

The Commodore 64 remains the best selling desktop computer of all time. When it appeared in 1982, it gave a generation of young people almost magical powers to conjure worlds in silicon, code and memory. In an example of early creative empowerment technology, hidden within the classic C64 game 'Wizard' was an advanced level editor that let players construct their own worlds and explore the rules that governed them. In true wizard fashion, these worlds were sealed through arcane commands into iron oxide powder (floppy disks) and passed hand to hand among a community of apprentices.

For as long as there has been technology there have been artists who have creativly "misused" it for purposes not intended by the original designers. By doing this, the "users" turn the tables and become the de facto "designers" of the product's purpose and functionality. Great examples from recent history are the turntable and the Roland TR-808. Both of these were repurposed in creative ways by the hip hop community in the 1980s, and this creative reimagining then led to new technologies based on the reinterpretation of the device (for example, the innovation of scratching vinyl led to Serato's simulated digital vinyl scratching functionality). The repurposing of turntables, drum machines and samplers also led to major cultural reverberation as hip hop exploded in popularity, including the subsequent development of hip hop video games like PaRappa the Rappa. This classic 1997 release is considered to be the first true rhythm game, setting the stage for mega hits like Guitar Hero and Rock Band in the 2000s.

Unlike traditional musical scores, video game soundtracks are designed to flexibly react to the player's unpredictable inputs. This is similar to the avant-guard "aleatoric music" popularized by Cage and Stockhausen in the 1950s. In aleatoric music, elements of the composition are left to chance or to the choices of the performers and, in the case of video game soundtracks, changes to the composition/tempo/intensity of the music are controlled by the player's movements through the world. To accomplish this, the soundtrack is composed of flexible and adaptive components like the tentacles of an octopus. The result is an intelligent, ever-shifting soundscape where no two "performances" are alike.
A classic example of this is Castlevania Symphony of the Night for the PS1. Michiru Yamane's work on the 1997 release is considered notable and fuses classical Bach-inspired elements with modern rock music.
