When our children come to us with words like “you don’t ever play with me” “you always choose my brothers side” “you’re always working” it can trigger us to feel like we are doing it wrong and from that place we might react instead of respond. Unfortunately when we react we miss what our child is really trying to say “I miss you” “I feel unimportant” “am I loved?” Getting defensive, blaming or shamming in these moments further fuels the feeling for our child.

The next time your child says something like this pause, then respond with empathy, validation and curiosity. “You feel like I am always working, I imagine that feels sad for you, can you tell me more?” By pausing and connecting in this way we send the message that what you are feeling matters and that I am here no matter what. #consciousparenting #gentleparenting #awareparenting #intentionalparenting #mindfulparenting
Ahh this video!!! As we cross over the one year anniversary of my papas passing, we are looking at old videos of him with our kiddos!! These memories bring so much joy to my heart and remind me of his bright beautiful spirit and how he brought that out of everyone he met! Miss you dad ❤️
One year ago today, my Papa spread his wings and crossed over the rainbow bridge.

Some days it feels impossible that an entire year has passed. Other days it feels like he has been woven into everything around me for so much longer.

I see him in my children. In Beauden’s adventurous spirit. In Seaenna’s tender heart. In the way they laugh, explore, love, and remind me to stay present. Pieces of him live on through them.

I feel his teachings guiding me every day. The lessons he shared, the values he embodied, the way he showed up for the people he loved. His fingerprints are all over the woman I am today.

And somehow, when I need him most, he still finds ways to say hello. Through a song that comes on at just the right moment. Through a hawk overhead. Through a feeling that washes over me out of nowhere and reminds me that love doesn’t end when a life does.

I miss him deeply. I miss his voice, his hugs, his wisdom, and simply knowing he was here.

But alongside the grief is gratitude.

Gratitude that I got to call him my father.
Gratitude for every lesson, every adventure, every memory.
Gratitude that his love continues to ripple through generations.

Today I honor the ache of missing him and the gift of having loved him.

Fly free, Papa.

Until we meet again. ❤️ #oneyearanniversary❤️ #missyoupapa❤️

Your vote would mean so much to us! ❤️
Our children’s art is a window into what they are observing, experiencing, feeling and processing. When we use our phone in front of our kids they often internalize it as, the phone is more important than me. Of course us parents would argue that our phones are not more important than our children, but unfortunately the experience for them is different. This was such a good reminder to be aware of phone use. To do it when our kids are in another room or at school. And most importantly to choose connect over phone use when we can. What is one small shift you can make?
The issue is not our child’s misbehavior, the issue is that we get triggered by our child’s behavior. Children are just being children. They act the way they do because of their underdeveloped brain. Children have a hard time listening, fallowing directions, cooperating, and with impulse control. This is because their prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for problem solving, rational thinking, logic, and impulse control is barely developed. What creates more of an issue is that we become triggered by these behaviors and then our reactions and our dysregulated nervous system state activates our children survival brain, and the behaviors that are frustrating to us become worse. This video is not to blame us as parents, but it is to raise awareness that our job is to learn why our child’s behavior feels so triggering to us, heal those parts of ourselves, and learn to regulate our nervous system system during challenging moments, so that we can show up in the exact way our children need. It’s not about being perfect parents, but it is about being aware and present parents. If you’re ready to learn why you get triggered, comment “Support” and I’ll be in touch. #consciousparenting #gentleparenting #awareparenting #attachmentparenting #connectedparenting
4 things I would tell parents after 13 years of practicing as a therapist and parent coach.
Something I have been incredibly committed to in parenting is not micromanaging my children. Children need to feel free to explore, make mistakes, get messy, engage in risk taking because it literally helps their brain to grow. For us parents who were raised with parents who might have been more controlling, this can be hard for us to do. It takes incredible awareness to slow down, to pause before engaging so that our children have room to express themselves freely. I honesty ask myself, does this really matter, do I really give a sh**? Normally the answer is no. Unless my children are truly in danger or something in my house is in danger of breaking, the answer is almost always no. I encourage you to see where you are controlling and see where you can let go. ❤️
This one phrase can completely shift the energy in your home, increase cooperation and decrease disconnection. “Do you a question.”

Recently I talked to a family who had heard me talk about this before and they told me “Mirra, we tried your ‘do you have a question’ guidance and it has completely shifted the dynamic in our home. They shared that when their son would ask in a way that felt demanding it would create conflict, disconnection and stress. Once they learned that their child wasn’t being disrespectful but rather was communicating in the only way his brain knew how, everything changed. 1. They stopped taking the demand personally. 2. they began to meet him where he was and 3 Conflict turned into a teaching moment which left them all feeling more connected and left the parents feeling more capable in those challenging moment. Try this and let me know how it goes.
I love this video! All these tips are so great and essential for creating great habits and a deep sense of happiness in our lives. This is great guidance for parents and also for all of us adults. ❤️
