First Shake down flight of the year with a touch and go landing here. Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina. Hopefully not too long until we see her at the summer Airshows.

I had a beyond the ropes tour of the Handley Page Hampden TB1, ‘P1344’, currently on display at the Royal Air Force Museum, London. This Included a look inside the fuselage and a talk about the cockpit and future restoration plans that will be taking place. Seeing the bullet holes still showing on the fuselage and learning about this aircraft was very thought provoking.
This aircraft was shot down over Finland in 1942, transiting to the Kola Peninsula to carry out fleet protection duties for the Arctic Convoys. Two of the crew, Sgts. Robertson and Garrity, lost their lives during the air battle and another, Sgt Miller, died during the eventual crash landing. P/O Perry and Cpl. Shepherd both survived and spent the remainder of the war as POWs. The aircraft was recovered in the early 90’s and after the Museum took ownership in 1992 it has been undergoing a major restoration and conservation since then. #raf #vintageaircraft #airplane #aircraft #warbird

After proving its worth in China, the carrier-based Zero was used in the attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 194l. At the start of the war in the Pacific it outclassed every Allied fighter. Its supremacy was finally broken by the new American fighter, the F6F Hellcat, introduced in 1943. At the end of 1944 Zeros were used in suicide attacks against Allied shipping by Kamikaze pilots.

THE VICKERS WELLINGTON
This Medium Bomber was built of GEODETIC CONSTRUCTION which was renowned for its great strength and durability. The WINGS and SIDE PANELS from WELLINGTON 1A L7775, which you see here on display, provide an outstanding example of this famous form of construction. Thanks,to this strong and robust framework, the Wellington
could sustain a great amount of damage and yet, still remain flying - returning their young, courageous crews to base.
Geodetic construction was designed by BARNES WALLIS, who had
previously used it in the manufacture of the R.80 and R.100 Airships and
the Vickers Wellesley. Later it was used in the Vickers Warwick. #vickers #worldwartwo #worldwar #aviation #design

AVRO Ashton Mk.2
WB491
BRIEF HISTORY
The Ashton started life as an Avro Tudor 2, registered G-AJJW. In the early 50s the four piston engines of the Tudor were replaced by two pairs of Nene turbo jet engines and the aircraft was used for pressurisation, instrumentation and air-conditioning tests at high altitudes. In 1954 it was modified to become an engine test bed, a Rolls-Royce Conway was mounted underneath the fuselage and later an Avon was also test flown. The aircraft now moved to Hucknall where again a Conway was installed for tests. By 1960 it had been flown to Farnborough and it ceased flying. The front fuselage was removed and eventually joined the museum collection at Rhoose. By 1995 it was taken to Woodford by the Avro Heritage Society and then to Winthorpe in 2003.
